Daycare center for sick children? What would you like to see?

Published

We've all been there..."mom, I don't feel too good", and it's 3 a.m.! "But I need to go to work/clinical/school!" you say.

If you had a place where you could drop a sick child on days like this, what would you like it to be like? How much would you expect to pay?

I am contemplating a center like this for when I finish nursing school. If you have any comments, suggestions or warnings, I will love to hear it.

Thanks.

Yes, I was a paramedic for 7 years, and I had a wonderful boss. I just really disagree with the idea of dropping your ill child off somewhere. The idea of someone else coming INTO the childs home ( a familiar environment) is better.

My stepson has chronic asthma, too. It IS a pain to make sure that everyone is giving him his meds properly.

I'm on your side here and you made some really good suggestions for parents with sick kids.

These are the terrible dilemmas that inspire me to stay home with my toddler. I was at home with my older kids (21, 19, 15).

I work part-time and scheduled today off due to a lengthy dentist appointment for my toddler and conscious sedation. He did well but really wanted mommy afterwards. We spent the afternoon pretty much entwined. :)

These kinds of conversations are ones which I continue to have with my kids so they can make life decisions based on what is best for their value system.

I'm just really uncomfortable with daycare period and the idea of leaving a sick child with someone outside of the family bothers me so I wouldn't avail myself of the OP's daycare center for sick kids.

I'm grateful to have my mother and father-in-law to watch my son the two days a week I work. They live on a farm and he loves it. There is a guaranteed tractor ride with grandpa and gardening with grandma.

But my goal is still stay home full time.

my mom is a nurse, and her hospital had a service called "Sniffles" which was for employees sick children. She had to take my sister there a few times, and while it was great because they got lots of TLC and 1:1 care, the downside is that since the kids are sick, they couldn't play with other children were there due to exposure, etc....so it was always a bummer when my sister had a cold, but not a fever and couldn't go to daycare. She'd go to Sniffles, but would be alone all day with her care provider. I think its a great service, but its a double edged sword ya know?

oh and the hospital payed their employees for this. So my mom never had to pay any out of pocket expenses (which was great cuz she was the major breadwinner, so she couldn't always stay at home with us because it was the "right thing" or whatever).

Good luck!!
