Day shift on no sleep?

I'm a casual nurse with low seniority, due to this I mainly work nights. However, today I'm scheduled for a 12 hour day shift and despite being in bed by 1030pm, I haven't slept a wink. I don't feel tired right now,but am worried about this lack of sleep catching up to me later in the day.

Would you call in for this?

While I might chance it on two hours of sleep, on no sleep I would call in. Zombie mode does not work well on day shift.

I have called in for this reason. You will not be sharp enough to take care of your patients.

Get some sleep.

If it were me, I would not call in...BUT...I know my body and I certainly can operate decently without sleep. Between work, chronic insomnia, kids, and grad school, I'm quite adept at pulling all nighters and functioning the next day. Not ideal...But that's me.

Only you know how your mind and body operates on no sleep, so only you can really make that call. Safety first and foremost. When in doubt, call out.

It depends. Did you sleep or nap during the day at all?

When I worked in the hospital, the first night that I worked, I was routinely up for 24 hrs by the time I got home. I always woke up like normal the morning of, was up all day, went to work, worked all night then came home after being up for 24 hrs and could still only sleep for 4 or 5 hours.
