are other places dating there saline irrigation in the warmers and taking them out after three days.
our OR told us that all the saline and water in plastic bottles have to be dated when they are placed in the warmer and taken out three days later if not used becuase the plastic breaks down in the warmers and after three days they are no good.

G'day All,
In Aus I've dated all fluids in warmers for a two week expiry period in two different hospitals, one public, one private, opposite sides of Sydney, so not assocoated with each other, so this seems to be fairly common here. Not sure of the reason, though.

I have never heard this before, but I have always worked in large hospitals where we can't keep enough saline in the warmers. Interesting question--it does seem reasonable that the heat would affect the plastic.
Have you checked with your hospital's pharmacy? They mind know or be able to find out.

I have never dated saline in the warmers, but I have known a few nurses that would date anything that was warm......but enough of that.
In all the hospitals I have worked we have never dated the saline in th ER. I would love to see some research on this. It seems to make sense that the heat would cause the plastic to break down faster, but I would imagine it would be months instead of days or weeks.

Dating warm saline is a JACHO requirement. Once it has been in the warmer it must be used after 3 days or thrown out. You cannot take it out of the warmer, cool it off and put it back in. Also there are temperature requirements concerning the temperature of the fluid and how warm it can be.

In our OR we have to date the saline and water bottles and remove them after 3 days in the warmer. We warm them to 112 F. It seems this is acceptable by the manufacturer and the saline will still be waranteed. After 3 days they will not.

We also have to date all fluids in our warmers and they must be disposed of after 72 hours in accordance with JACHO. It is something that JACHO looks out for during there inspection. They told us just yesterday that temperatures between 110 and 120 are acceptable. We have JACHO at our hospital all this week. JOY :angryfire ! !
