Dang, I have some great co-workers!

I just want to say that team work on my unit really ROCKS! We really step up and help each other. My experience this past Boxing Day (Dec 26 for you Americans!) just proves it. Because it is a STAT (ie time and a half) we are on "weekend staffing" - because you know that there is less work to do on weekends, right?! (ha ha ha).

Anyway - I was in charge, which means I have to do rounds with the MD, attend "bed meeting" - where decisions are made about how to move pts to best utilize beds, plus I have a full assignment So I am doing all this and by 11:00 and am way behind in my work. So one of my co-workers says "what can I do to help" - and then takes care of am care, plus taking out staples on one of my pts!

Fast forward to lunch - we are all sitting around together having our lunch, when one of my pts rings. Someone else answers, says "I don't know what he wants, I couldn't hear". I am just getting up to go to room when the bell rings again. I go in - the pt's wife was ringing - pt was completely unresponsive to all stimuli - I hasten out to grab a dyamap machine and yell into the conference room "I need help". Right away, everyone is out and coming to help. I yell to someone to call for the rapid assessment team, which they do. All come into room to help. After a few minutes some stay to help, the others head out and help cover the floor. Once the team arrives, I stay with my pt, the rest leave. My pt turns out to be in a severe Ventricular Fibrillation requiring immediate transfer to the ICU. I of course have to go with my pt. When I make it back to the unit, I find that all my pts have been taken care of - one has been put back to bed, meds have been given, etc.

That's nice to hear. Sounds like a great group.So often you only hear the complaints about coworkers on here. I am lucky I that I also work with a fabulous bunch that works as team.

We can see when one is struggling and lend a hand. Newer nurses can feel more than comfortable asking questions and pinging ideas off of the more experienced without fearing some sort of snark.

I'm afraid that we are the exception, not the norm, from what I hear from other nurses.

I think if all nurses were like you it would be a much better profession. It's hard to jump in and help out when others are always jumping down your throat every time you have a question which has never made sense to me - wouldn't you rather help new grads learn so they can help you when you need it?! And would want to?!
