Can a PowerPort (or any other implanted port) be used to obtain accurate central venous pressure (CVP) readings? Does anyone have experience with this?

I have done it but it depends on insertion site & where tip terminates. We use a lot of jugular sites

the tip termination is not such an issue for me. as far as what meandraggonbrett stated, i too am a firm believer in watching the trending of the values and treating the direction they are heading. we use femoral lines for cvp readings and that tip is about as far from rt atrium as can be. just my humble opinion.

Research has shown that CVP readings through a PICC line are reliable, though they may vary by one or two points. In addition to checking with the manufacturer, you could also look at your units policy and procedures, or speak with your unit CNS if you have one
