Cumberland University Mt. Juliet campus - adult night & weekends

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

Hello,

If anyone has any questions about this program, please feel free to ask me. I'm finishing the 4th semester out of the 5, so I have an understanding of the program. Whether its a "big" or "small" question, ask away, and I'll do my best to answer.

This program is relatively new compared to other nursing programs, so there just simply isn't a lot of information online about it. When I was researching BSN schools, I was a little frustrated due to the lack of info. I just want to be a resource for anyone in a similar position. Please feel free to ask me any questions in the thread or through PM. It would probably be best to ask in the thread, so others can see. Thanks

Kgreeneyes,

Sorry it took so long to respond. Yes, it is possible to work during the program. It is specifically set up for this. Some worked full-time. You have to plan for it though. As soon as you get your syllabus, ask off for work on days that you need off (before tests if you need extra time to study, weekends for clinicals, etc.). Hopefully, you have a job where you can be flexible with hours. Some professors are good about moving exams to different dates to make it work for everyone.

I actually posted on an older post that you had commented on before coming across this one. Thanks for all the info. It answered many questions I had. When you say that you had clinicals at a nursing home for 3-4 days, were those days during the week? If so, were they after 4:00p? The main reason for my applying to this program is so that I can continue to work full time. There is no way possible I could go down to part time. Also, any luck on landing your first job? What is the atmosphere like? I am finishing up prereqs at Vol State right now and I dread going to class because everyone seem like they do not want to be there. No one wants to get together and study. My whole experience has seemed so uninvolved.

95% of clinicals were on the weekend, including the nursing home ones. The few that are during the week (peds and psych) are in the evening, and they are only 3-5 weeks, once a week.

I applied for a job during my last semester and got the job contingent upon passing the NCLEX, which I did. So, I graduated in May and had a job in June.

The atmosphere is good, at least with my class. Everyone is tired and busy, so many people pull together to study and do assignments. Many people became very close. Everyone isn't necessarily unhappy to be in class, but everyone is chasing their dream of becoming an RN, so that's obviously a good motivator. Every cohort of students is unique and has their own traits as a whole.

If if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask, and I wish you the best.

First of all, thank you for being open to answer everyone's questions! You've already answered a lot of mine. Planning for Fall 2016 admit into the night program. I have two young children and work daily during the week until 2PM. My problem and question is, do the instructors work with you on scheduling your clinicals? My husband is a FF so he is on a 24 on 48 off shift. It really comes down to him only working 10-12 days per month anyway. It will be hard enough rallying up family members to help babysit during the weeknights when class is in session. I am wondering if since the night program is a smaller class size they will take into consideration allowing me to schedule my clinicals when he is off shift on the weekends to be home with our children? He typically has two full weekends off a month. Are clinicals on Saturday and Sunday? or just Saturdays? Also, I have the Kaplan coming up in January & have the study practice book, any tips? A lady I took A&P with at Vol State (is now in the nursing program at Cumberland) said she had to take it several times to get a passing or acceptable score! I'm really nervous about putting myself and my own dream of becoming a nurse first and putting my family through so much for 5 semesters, but really feel it will benefit us in the long run. It was nice to read that the night students really stick together to study and pass. Has anyone dropped out or withdrawn since you've been in the night program? I worry if I get in and have trouble making the grades or trouble finding someone to babysit 1 or 2 nights a week that I may have to quit the program. Sure wish Mt Juliet had an evening childcare facility!!!

Hi I'm interested in applying for Cumberland in the fall. Are you still in the program?

I'm applying for the Fall 2016 MJ cohort too! I'm nervous about the transition into the first semester. I'm hoping that I hear something sooner than the end of July. My friend didn't get her acceptance letter for the Fall 2015 Lebanon cohort until the third week in July.

Sure wish Mt Juliet had an evening childcare facility!!!

That would be super fantastic if they did!

Have you all taken your Kaplan Exam yet?

I took it last month and I was 4 points below the benchmark in math. I know of some people that didn't make the benchmark and were still accepted. I'm retaking mine May 20th because I don't want to take any chances.

I'm taking it on the 20th as well but for the first time. I'm so nervous.

I didn't study for the first time and did fine. Make sure you know how to multiple and divide fractions and work on word problems. That's where I slipped up. They aren't hard questions but just know the basic rules of math.

Thanks! I bought the book and have been trying to look over it and the science section is where I had the most problems

Can anyone tell me what your schedule was like? MTWTF or just certain days a week? It sounds like classes can go anywhere from 6PM to 10PM. Are clinicals on Saturdays and Sundays, or just one of the two?

I am seriously considering this program so any information would be greatly appreciated.
