CSULB pre-nursing also applying to LBCC

Published

This is for my daughter. She already put a nursing app for CSULB. But to make sure we don't lose time waiting in case CSULB didn't accept her this fall, we are also thinking of also applying to LBCC ADN. This is her last pre-req semester taking ANATOMY so not sure LBCC will take while this course is in progress. Her GPA is at the border line at 3.448 , TEAS at 89%, but can improve if she make As this spring. We are also waiting for CSUSB admission to accept our appeal, they need 3.5.

Anyone did similar thing? Any pro and con you can think of? imo ADN is very sure thing to get into BSN.

If her GPA isn't a 3.5, she likely won't even be considered for the waiting list at CSULB. All nursing programs in CA are highly impacted, and the CSUs only accept the top 10% (they generally receive about 10x as many applications as they have slots). Nursing programs are extremely competitive. She will need at least a 3.7 or 3.8 to get into a CSU. I would HIGHLY recommend she apply to LBCC and any other community colleges she can commute to, as they also receive about as many applicants per slot, but generally run on a lottery system, so all qualified applicants have an equal chance of getting in. Even if her GPA were to improve this semester, it won't make much of a difference this application cycle, since CSULB makes their decisions in March, before her grades come out (or they did when I got in there).

Having one in-progress prereq is usually fine. Two or more could be problematic.

Hi Runbabyrun, I agreed and thank for helpful info. She has only one prereq left which is good. We are also waiting to hear back from CSUSB admission today. Too bad we missed nursing admission deadline for CSUSM as it was early than other CSUs and we misread it. I think will try LBCC for sure, Cerritos, Rio Hondo, Chaffey at this point. Also I checked ASN-BSN at CSULB which is 2 year program, CSU Fullerton is 3 semesters or 1 year program at least. So ADN-BSN to us seems to be easier route (as long as she keeps up good GPA) to get into BSN since one already does all the core nursing class/work with RN license.

On the other hand, if we have to wait or need to think about another major/minor, I am thinking Health Care Admin is a very good route to have, maybe take/add a few more extra classes in business management and Information System will help also. Sound like another good option?

If she wants to be a nurse, don't waste time and money on another degree. It'll set her back for financial aid and other resources, and may even limit her options for attending a university later, as many are not accepting second-bacc students right now with the economy the way it is. She'd be better off getting her CNA license and working for a year or boosting her GPA with some transferable classes (or both!). Another degree also won't improve her job prospects any, when it comes time for looking for an RN job.

ASN-BSN is a great route that many take, and they're often flexible to allow for the students to work while they're in the program. Having options for length is also nice, so that she has that added flexibility.
