Hello there!
I would love to start a thread of those applying for CSULA's ABSN program for summer 2019. I was hoping we could give each other some support and hopefully get to know each other a bit before starting school! I'm a little worried as I hear that the program is super competitive and I don't have many volunteer hours or experience. Is this a deciding factor in the decision process?
I don't have anything to add to the financial discussion, sorry- I've been planning to attend school for 3+ years so I've saved for it, as I was guessing it would be all loans (and I'm as wary as you all about debt). BUT- I wanted to update something! I just looked in the CSULA GET, and my to-do list changed from all of my transcripts saying "initiated" to "no current items..." which seems like my transcripts were received by admissions. I think we're on our way, folks!
Thank you for sharing your positions on this matter, @RNtobe26 and @RNshortly. I would be lying if I said this wasn't a source of inner contention for me. Ultimately, I'll pursue the program should I get in and will give it my all to ensure that I utterly crush the curriculum. But at the same time, ugh. I'm beating myself up for not having drawn a more firm outline for finances for the past two years.
@RNshortly, I've run into a similar situation with finding scholarships, that is. It seems that many of the windows of opportunities for scholarships would actually be sometime in the Fall of 2019 going into Spring of 2020, because like you said many institutions require proof of enrollment (some proof of GPA, etc). There was a CSULA ABSN grad not too long ago who was a recipient of a nurse corps (or health corps?) government reimbursement program. Basically, you agree to work in an under-served area for 2+ years as part of a contractual agreement for loan assistance. The alternative is to take out 50,000 in loans (segmented), consolidate the net as soon as the final expenses have been paid, and then nuke the loans in 2-3 years. Anyway, let's help each other out / mull over this together once we're in school. ?
I want to add that I turned 30 a few weeks back. I'm not "old," but I do feel a raging pressure to tighten the screws in this area of my life.

I think you are talking about this? http://www.calstatela.edu/page/absn-program-student-melody-henderson
The student received a NURSE Corps Scholarship from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources & Services Administration. Full tuition and more! Doesn't sound like a bad deal, especially when many have goals to work with underserved populations as it is.

So....T-minus 2 or so days now? Raaahhh. Whoever said said something about "put me out of my misery," I am right there with you. I've also been thinking...30 spots is so little for so many qualified candidates...too bad there can't be more. I hope we all find a place somewhere we like. Hang in there everyone.

Hey Everyone,
It's my first time posting but I must admit I have been following this thread religiously while anxiously waiting to hear back regarding admissions. I also am on the same boat. @jleegato
It scares me greatly to take out a loan of 32k just for tuition and more for extras (equipment, books, etc). I've looked into applying to various private scholarships but most require proof of enrollment before submitting. I did email Dr. Hinoki about this specifically and she said she recommends taking our private loans but we will have the opportunity to speak with a financial advisor once we are accepted. Additionally, she said we would have more information about financial options at orientation.
