CSULA ELMN 2011

Published

Anyone else applied? I know they're supposed to notify us on April 1st but I'm curious if anyone who applied got any feedback yet. :)

I need to get titers done too.

Yea, I found the facebook page earlier, then I accidentally clicked out of the window, and now I cannot find the group. So strange Lol.

I hope this is the right link:

If it still doesn't work, I think I'll just PM everyone my email so you can add me -_-" lol

Congrats to those who got in! I am a 2012 hopeful, so I've been following this thread. I have a quick question regarding prerequisites for those of you who live in the LA area. Did you complete the Human Nutrition prereq prior to applying? Where did you take the class? I can't seem to find an equivalent course at any of the LA community colleges.

I took it online at West LA College. It is listed in the family and consumer studies section of the schedule.

Hey everyone,

Random question: does anyone know if health insurance is mandatory? I checked out the Student health insurance from WF for CSULA and it's soooo pricey. $1160/6 mo.?! Does anyone have any good recommendations for student health insurance? Thanks!

Yep - it's mandatory. I get mine through Anthem Blue Cross and pay $111/month for health and dental. I have a pretty high deductible, but I only plan to really use my insurance for emergencies. I've been able to get a physical, CXR, and titers through the student health center pretty cheaply.

So there are no specific requirements for the student health insurance, such as maximum amount of deductible per year? Some schools require an equivalent health insurance to what they offer and that is when it gets very pricey. Is that not the case with CSULA? Can I choose any US based health insurance then?

Another question about student loans. Is summer quarter at CSULA considered beginning of a new year for purposes of federal student aid?

Can I walk into student aid office without appointment to get all my questions answered as it gets difficult to get through over the phone?

Thanks for any guidance

Wrightnurse- Summer is considered the start of a new year for financial aid. They said that is why we have not found out about our financial aid packets yet.

I don't recall any specifics re: health insurance, just that we have to have it and show proof as part of our health clearance packet.

In terms of financial aid, you can get a max of $12,500 for the first part of the program (depending on your EFC you may get more or less of that amount subsidized). It's disbursed over 4 quarters, which means that you won't get any more federal aid until you pass the NCLEX following the first 15 months. Many of us took out private loans (e.g. Wells Fargo MedCAP), and I made sure to take out enough so that I could cover tuition for the whole prelicensure portion and have money to live on. If I budget right, I shouldn't have to take out any more money for summer - I got my last disbursement this Spring quarter, but I should have enough left to pay for summer out of pocket (instead of showing the school proof of financial aid coming). However, some of my classmates are talking about taking out additional private loans to cover summer.

Going to the FA office is definitely easier than calling - at least you get to see someone in person. Still, there's been a lot of confusion regarding our program and the fact that it's under Extended Education, so you may still get some blank stares and people sending you back and forth to different offices.

Looks like I won't be getting federal student loan for this year. I have too much money in savings. So, I wanted to get federal student loan starting summer 2012 and on. So, I hope that will be possible. Or, maybe I have to wait till fall 2012 for federal student loan to kick in. By that time I should be pretty poor ...

Does anyone know when we are to do the drug screen? What about the fire card? Thanks very much in advance!

I am fairly sure that we dont sign up to do a drug screen on our own. Its random so most places call you and then you have 24 hours or so to get your drug screen done. Im not sure how csula will do it. Kathy will probably give us more info about this at the orientation. I am not sure about the fire card...honestly, I dont even know what that is haha.

Yeah, I think K**** said during our interview that we'll be paying for the drug screen (is that the LiveScan?) and those types of things later on, and she'll talk about them during the orientation. She also said that they have a LiveScan department ON campus at CSULA, so we won't have to go extra far to do it, we'll get it done right on campus. That must mean we're going to get that stuff done later.

K**** did not mention Fire Cards to me, but I imagine that it is a certificate issued for completing a fire safety lesson. If we do need to get it, I think she will mention it during orientation, or you can e-mail her to double check, since I'm not really sure either.. sorry!
