CSUF EL-MSN Fall 2009 Applicants

Published

are there any fall 2009 applicants out there?

Thanks Levoila and JM! Im going to CSUF... closer to me, and the MSN. JM, we're going to be classmates!

Levoila, thanks for the support and always keeping us updated! You guys have been my extended support system during this crazy wait!! Cheers to us, and everyone else starting programs this year!

Hi I had a quick question for you...I see you got in so if you don't mind my asking I was wondering what your resume looks like???? Like as far as your undergrad 6o units...

I only have a 2.7 in my last 60 semester units. In my prerequs though I have all A's and B's. Plus I have done a lot of community service.....is there any chance for me????

Hi Jordangirl,

It looks like they may calculate the last 60/90 units that you've taken, I think total, so your As and B's may help boost the 2.7. I have a 4.0 in my pre-reqs, and am currently taking Chem this semester. My undergrad GPA wasnt spectactular, but the last 60 units were mostly A's. I had volunteered at a local hospital for a little while, and also at a homeless shelter. In my personal statement, I really tried to emphasize how the accelerated program at CSUF would be a good fit for my future goals, and tried to do the same in the interview. I hope that they are able to increase the class size next year... I know there are alot of qualified applicants out there! You'll get into the program thats right for you... just finish strong in your pre-reqs and try to get some good letters or rec. Start thinking about your personal statement now and have it read by as many folks as you can. Also, apply to different programs that consider applicants based on things other than just primarily GPA.Good luck!

Congratulations to those who got the acceptant letter already! For those on the waitlist, don't give up! There is a big chance of getting in too.

I got an acceptant letter from CSUF yesterday too! Now I am actually more stressed than happy. I already accepted an offer from CSULA, now I don't know which school to go to! CSULA, CSUF, or CSULB (yet to find out if I get accepted, but there is a great chance) ?!!!

I didn't go to any of their information sessions. I really not sure what the the pros and cons of those programs are.... I live near the LA areas, I might just choose CSULA. what do you guys think? I need to make a decision by this week so that I can give up my spot to other people. Help me please!!!

Thanks everyone! Good luck in your future!

I also think the prereqs classes are very important! I got all "As" in those classes. Work hard on those classes if you plan to apply for this program.

Good luck!

I have no idea what CSULA's program is like. You should take the time to visit both schools and check them out this week. Try and call the departments to see if you can schedule times to talk with a rep from each. Ask about class size, number of clinical hours required (more is better I think), NCLEX pass rates, etc... It's important that you find the department that matches your personal and professional needs the closest. When you consider the high drop-out rates from these programs, you want to do everything you can to make sure that it's a good fit for you before you even start. Compare the costs (including tuition, length of program, expense and hassle of commuting to each) and also consider which region of southern cali you'd like to work, at least for the first couple of years after you graduate. Whichever area you're in, you'll get to know the hospitals in that area through your clinical hours, etc... That's just my :twocents: Good luck. At least you have some exciting choices.

I agree. I actually think it'd be hard to get in with 60 unit gpa of 3.5 or below. That's just my assumption from seeing how competitive it was this year to get in. While volunteering is good, almost everyone I have talked to or met who applied had volunteer experience, so I wouldn't count on it to set you apart from the rest of the applicants. NOT having some community service/volunteer experience might set you apart in a negative way, unless you had interesting employment experiences.

Because CSUF is such a formulaic and grade-heavy application process, my suggestion would be to take lots of units in whatever classes you can be sure to do well in during summer and fall next year. This way you can load the last 60 units in your favor. Also, if you have any prereqs left and you're not absolutely sure that you'll get an A, leave it for Spring. That way it is counted as "in-process" when you apply and it's grade is not added to your GPA calculations. Remember, the prereqs are doubly important because they are counted in both the last-60 and the prereq catagories for the CSUF application equation.

Despite the importance of grades, don't forget to put a lot of time into your letter of intent. The interview process was pretty cursory, so the letter seems to be the only way to really let them know who you are and what is special about you. Also, make sure that the people you ask to write your letters of rec will write you good ones. The prof that did our interviews told us that multiple applicants had NEGATIVE letters of rec sent in for them. That's just ridiculous!

Don't stress the interview. If it's like this year's, it's really more of an informal vetting of the candidates. It could not have given them much to work with besides a sense of 1) does the applicant speak English, 2) are they relatively normal (or can they pretend to be for an hour or so), and 3) is the applicant acutally interested enough to show up on time.

Hope these are useful comments.

Thanks for all the replies.

To Sandy...:

I have already graduated from Cal State Fullerton. That GPA without ANY of my prereqs is 2.7. I am a bit confused as to how they calculate your last 60 units though. Is it exactly in order your last 60 units before you graduated? Or do they figure your prereqs into the last 60 unit GPA? Because if that was the case I would have well over a 3.0...I have heard different from things from so many people that I am not sure about it anymore...

Also, has anyone who already got accepted into the program not been finished with their prereqs when they applied???

Sorry for all the questions...I am gonna be applying and I am just trying to cover everything so that there are no surprises! Thanks!!!

has anyone here completed the bsn program at fullerton already.... or currently in it? Just wanted to know a little about the program as well as about the admissions process if possible..? I have been waiting for like 6-7 months now! :o

Hi Sandy,

Congratulations! Did you hear from CSULB? Which school have you decided on?

Are there anyone here who are planning to apply for Fall 2011 at CSU Fullerton for El-MSN? I have my Bachelors in Liberal Studies from CSULB and decided to switched to nursing. I have my teaching credential, but I realized teaching was not for me! I wanted to be a pediatric nurse since I love working with kids and taking care of them. I'm currently taking nursing prereqs and thinking of going to CSU Fullerton for the EL-MSN Program. It's frustrating that all the prereq science classes are impacted in almost all community colleges. I'm so worried about getting in to Fall 2011. I emailed CSUF about the program and some lady replied back and said that I should be finished with all the prereq's by the end of Spring 2011. I'm only gonna need Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, and Statistics for the prereqs.

Also, I don't have any "healthcare" experience, but I've done few community services from the past. How do I start working in a healthcare facilities even w/o any experiences?

Are there any other schools that have accelerated nursing program other than CSU Fullerton.

Please advise..I need help! :crying2:

Thanks and hope to hear from any of you...

Joana

Hi Joana,

I am in the same boat with you - looking for a career change and am seriously considering nursing. I have a MSW from CSULB. I am looking into entering the EL MSN program at CSUF in Fall of 2011. Currently, trying to take my science pre-requisites, but running into problems getting into the classes at the community colleges, because they are all impacted. May have to take them at a private institution and pay an arm and leg. I would be interested in exchanging information with you while we go through the process, like the other members did with each other.

Good Luck - Hope to see more of your posts.
