CSUDH vs OU RN-BSN

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

I am in between Ohio university and cal state dominguez hills. I already have a bachelors in another filed. I would like a prgram that doesn't require all the extra classes that we really don't need for nursing degree since that adds to the cost. I was looking at Univ texas Arlington but they require all these other classes that ends up adding more money to their advertised 9k. I also looked into but dont like that i have to give the money up front and is on a pass no pass system. Help please

Audra - one of my recent advisees at CSUDH was accepted into an East Coast CRNA program and will begin her studies in the Fall. She took 2 years to complete the CSUDH program while working full-time in an ICU. Many CRNA programs expect 2-3 years of ICU experience for a successful application to these competitive programs. A part-time schedule (6-8 units per term and 3-5 in the summer) is very manageable with full-time work. Some students take on more, but frankly that first year in practice is very stressful and full of new learning at the hospital. Some of the advantages of the CSUDH program when compared with others are: on-campus hands-on lab for the health assessment course (good foundation for advanced assessment in graduate programs), clinical preceptorship for leadership/management (you could do this in an OR or Surgical Center), and courses for the Calif. Public Health Certificate. In terms of the pre-requisite courses you mentioned, I think the English course is likely the Critical Thinking requirement which can be a course in English, Business, Philosophy, or other departments. Your best bet is to look at Welcome to ASSIST to determine which courses from CA community colleges meet the CSU requirements. I often recommend that applicants to the RN-to-BSN program look at Coastline Community College for online Statistics and Critical Thinking. You may be in time to complete those two classes this summer. Last, when admissions are closed, courses can be started via Open University until the next application period is open.

Thank you for taking the time to provide me with such insightful tips! The point made regarding the health assessment is so true and having an on campus lab would be extremely beneficial. It's also very encouraging to hear of your advisee getting accepted into a program and that working full time is manageable! Your reply is a huge help and highly appreciated :)

I cannot sing enough praises about CSUDH! I was accepted while in my ASN program and found the coursework challenging, yet managable. In fact, being accepted into CSUDH basically guaranteed securing my present job as a MedSurg RN (level II) in a large, downtown Los Angeles medical center.

I took a break this summer in order to complete my new grad program, but will jump right back in for Fall 2016, as I finally have my precious 3-day, night shift schedule. I am grateful for the flexibility of an online program, allowing me to work and not have to attend inperson classes.

I strongly suggest CSUDH, as it has the reputation, resources and is my alma mater for my BA (Interdisciplinary Studies), which I earned concurrent with my ASN.

Go TOROS!

Hello!  I was wondering if anyone had decided to attend the CSUDH BSN Summer Fast Track program?  If so, how was the zoom Health Assessment class?  What did they have the students do exactly during zoom?  I've been accepted to start Summer 2021 but I have some questions regarding what is expected for Health Assessment and how many days is required for the clinical portion near the end of the program?

@pandaeyes have you attended the orientation session?  You questions could be answered there.  The Health Assessment Lab is typically done on campus, but due to the pandemic we have been using Zoom.  In the Lab student typically practice exam skills (on a clothed human).  If you'd like to know more, e-mail the BSN Summer Fast Track Coordinator.

The clinical course near the end of the program is Community Health.  This includes the public health clinical - an important benefit of this program because to work as a Public Health Nurse, you must obtain a certificate to practice from CA. The course description is:

BSN 423 - Community-Based Nursing Role Performance (2 units)

Prerequisites: BSN 302, BSN 346, BSN 382, BSN 381, and BSN 422 (BSN 422 may be concurrent enrollment). Provides an opportunity for application of the knowledge and the skills of the community-based nurse in a community setting. Requires 90 hours of clinical practice with a preceptor for the Public Health Nurse Certificate.

I had recently applied to the Fast Track program before deadline and wasn’t aware that there was orientation.  It would have been nice to attend one beforehand.  Thank you for letting me know.

How was Health Assessment on Zoom?  Was the instructor asking to see how a Head to Toe assessment is done?  Are there discussion boards?  And how many essays are due per class?  Thank you for the insight!

Notification of the multiple orientation sessions occurs after the ADN student applies.  It's not an information session, rather an orientation to the program, online library, online classroom, etc.  We've received 400+ applications this year so it's pretty crazy getting everything processed.

Every course has discussion boards and other varied assignments (quizzes, papers, journal entries, PowerPoint presentations).  The number and type of assignments are different based on the number of units and subject matter.

If this is your first Summer, you won't be taking the Health Assessment courses (2nd Summer students only).  By Summer 2022 we will be back to normal and the Lab will be on-campus, live, hands-on!
