CSUB - Crashing Classes

Published

Hi everyone! I'm in the homestretch for pre-nursing prerequesites. Yay!

I was VERY stressed out because I need the 4 major sciences for 2014-2015: Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Microbiology

I'm #1 on the waiting list for Chemistry at the community college, and I plan to take the other three sciences at CSUB, where I plan to apply for nursing school. Micro is only offered in the Fall and Winter, and requires Chemistry, so my only option is to take it in the Winter quarter... a friend of mine recommends I NOT take Micro with Anatomy because Microbiology is tough, so she suggests crashing the Anatomy class for Fall.

I've never had to crash a class, and it has been years since I was at CSUB. Any luck in this? She said to show up early, sit in the front, and at the end of the class if there's room the professor will add me.

Right now, the class I'd WANT for Lecture would have me at #11 waiting list, and Lab I'd be #1.

Plus, worse case scenerio -- I can't get in for fall, I will just have to take Anatomy and Micro together. If you don't think Anatomy and Micro are tough together, then I won't stress for this quarter and go ahead and take Statistics online... but Chemistry + Statistics + Anatomy AND working part-time (self employed)... I don't think I Could handle that load.

It is worth a try. Different instructors have different ways of dealing with students who want to add the class. If nothing else, writing your name on a piece of paper for a drawing for three seats available with 32 people trying to add, makes it fair. You are only out your effort if you don't get in this time. Good luck.

I'm also taking my pre-reqs (including Anatomy) at CSUB this Fall. I haven't heard much about micro, but I have heard that Anatomy is pretty rigorous. Not necessarily difficult, but a lot of memorization, so try to take it when you think you'll have the most time to study for it. If that happens to be this quarter, then definitely show up to the lecture and ask the professor at the end if there's room for you to be added. The worst that can happen is the professor says no. Sorry I can't help you more on the microbiology issue, but hopefully you'll be able to get into anatomy this quarter and won't have to worry about it. Good luck!

Good day eurcynia,

I've never heard of crashing a class; what does crashing a class mean?

"but Chemistry + Statistics + Anatomy "

Doable but very tough. Statistics and chemistry might have a lot of homework. If it where me, I would be budgeting in 9 to 12 hours of time for chemistry, 12 hours of time for statistics, and 18 to 24 hours of time for anatomy (39 to 48 hours) per week.

Thank you.

It is a strange term, pmabraham. It means showing up uninvited (well, unenrolled). Kind of like "Crashing a party" or "Wedding Crashers" :)

Thanks everyone! I think I'll stay with the online Statistics class and see how I feel about it the first few weeks and drop it before it becomes a W to see how I can handle it with Chemistry. So far I've handled online classes really well, so maybe I can handle Statistics online better than I did 15 years ago.

ThatOneDude822, maybe I'll see you around campus! What year do you plan to apply?

"Crashing" a class is a strategy that has some merit. Many of the classes I've attended over the years had people doing exactly that, hoping to be added to the class because someone that was registered wasn't there and was dropped and that enough people on the waiting list weren't there to be added in their place. I've had professors ask prospective students to come back the next class meeting because some students couldn't be dropped until their 2nd no-show or that only those students that were on the formal "wait list" could be added to the roster and others could only be added after all of those students had passed on attending the class if there was still room in the class.

I have yet to have a Professor that would kick people out of class the first couple of days simply because they "crashed" the class and weren't on the wait list. After about the end of the 2nd class meeting they'd usually drop the hammer and finalize the roster and anyone not on the roster weren't allowed to attend the class from that point forward.

For the student, as long as there's no conflicting regularly scheduled class to attend, it's a low/no risk, potentially high reward strategy of adding classes, well, at least those classes that were essentially prerequisite or Gen Ed.

Nursing program courses were quite different... I think we might have had one or two people try to get into the class that first day of the first class, but that didn't work out so well... they were told the class list was closed and nobody could add the class that weren't already accepted into the program.

I'm hoping to apply for Fall '15. I got a couple prereqs out of the way in high school - I took AP Statistics w/ a 4 on the AP exam, and I took Chem 211 through the High School Academy, so I should be able to get the rest of my prereqs done this year. It's going to be a bit difficult though, because I'm in the honors program too, so that takes up 5 units per quarter. I'll have no room to mess up grade-wise if I really want a shot at getting in next year. That would be pretty crazy if we end up in the program together!

Pmabraham,

In the spirit of Robin Williams I would like to add some comedy to your question.
