Can anyone who got accepted to CSULB tell me what your resume looked like when you were accepted? GPA, Teas Scores, Prereq Scores, etc? I'm planning on applying to the program for Fall 2010 and I will still have Physiology in progress when I apply (but everything else completed). Does it make a huge difference if you have a course in progress? I know they count it as a C. I'm just wondering what my chances are of getting in, i know its really competetive, but then again they let in 90 students per semester which is pretty good for a CSU.
Thanks for the help!!
When I applied, I was applying for the Spring semester of nursing school, but decided to apply for the university to start in the Fall. I was set on CSULB so I only applied here for when I transferred. Although I wasn't in the program yet, I took mandatory "capstone" classes which you need to graduate and one nursing pre-req.. I applied that Fall for the Spring semester and I got in. So I kinda put all my eggs in one basket and got lucky. If you feel confident about your grades and TEAS test, I would recommend doing that to get the three mandatory capstone classes out of the way while you can and not worry about them later or having to apply for admission for Spring (I know that they are not taking any students in the middle of the school year because they admitted too many students, but I'm sure if you got into the nursing program they would let you into the university)..
Just my advice! :)
Capstone classes are just 'general education' classes which are different from your nursing classes. ALL CSULB students wanting a bachelors have to take these 'elective classes'.. There is a long list of classes which fall under the capstone category which complete this section, and you can pick what you want.. They range from like geography, parenting, human sexuality, study of comic books, health care administration, etc.. So you can see how diverse the range of capstone classes you can pick from..

that has the list of them. Capstone classes require a minimum amount of pages written in that semester (usually like 10-15) so it would be good to get these elective classes out of the way so you wont be writin these papers in nursing school when you should be doing careplans!
I was accepted for fall 2008, w/ overall GPA 3.6 and science GPA 4.0 (with one in progress when I applied, so they counted as a C against my grade, so i guess that makes it..3.5/3.6?). My TEAS were 89%. I've talked to other people in my group, we all think the program is not as difficult as it sounds like to get in. Just try to do really well either in ur science classes, or TEAS test. I have frd who got in w/ 3.3 GPA but with 99% TEAS. you just have to calculate the points. As for trimester/basic, i really would like to know more about it too. But to be honest with you, I personally don't feel the nursing program @ CSULB is as good as people make it sounds like. Kinda regret I choose here...(actually several of my classmates feel the same way too) but anyway! just remember to keep your options open :)! it is a pretty school, and LBMMC is a very nice hospital. As for the contract, they give u $3500, but you will actually only be getting $2200 (which is about just enough to cover tuition and txt bks), the rest goes to tax. So if you are reciving financial aid and decided to get stipened, it may effect it. I don't know much about the diff. b/t trimester/basic program yet since i'm just first semester. sorry :/.. but try to get pharmacology or pathophysiology out of the way if you can, which is two of the require classes for first semester. it will make ur first semester SO MUCH EASIER!! MUCH LESS STRESSFUL!! :) they offer pathophys @ goldenwest college (heard theres a really good instructor).
as for trimester...to "SummerC", how was the summer in trimester like? did u had to do 12 hr clinical? i'm going into 2nd semester.. any tips or books I could start reading about :)? I heard we have to do patient teaching plan, what is that exactly..? ^^"
Yes the first semester was HELL with pathophys and pharm. I promise the program will get better once all the pieces start fitting and things start to make sense. It all seems like a mess and its hard to put two and two together, but once you are in the 2nd semester or halfway through that, it all finally clicks and you are like, AHH i get it now.
The patient education is just where you develop a plan to teach like discharge instructions or teaching about signs of infection or diet changes or anything that can apply to your patients. We didn't have to do a teaching plan until our OB semester, so we taught about breast feeding, bathing the baby, how to change a diaper, problems to report to the dr, etc. So I'm assuming you'll just be teaching to your patients based on their statuses. 2nd semester med-surg is similar to 1st semester, but a little more in depth so just imagine the patients you have now, but you'll take more responsibility on.
I'd say start reading the two books that talk about diseases/education/care plans, written by Ignactivicus or something. I swore by that book in 2nd semester (and 3rd semester also) because it helps connect co-morbidities, basic pathophys, drugs, and careplans...
And although the stipend you get from LBMMC is partially taken out in taxes, you get alot back in April for tax refunds.
So I know all about the Trimester versus Basic programs and that its a lottery system of who gets in, but I'm unclear on how one goes about doing it...
Is everyone automatically a candidate for the trimester program, or is it only for those who request to be candidates for the lottery for the trimester program?
I just want to consider my options, I might have quite a bit of GE left to do and I might like to do the basic option instead. Is it just luck which one I get into, or would I have the option of not being a candidate for the trimester program?
Thanks for the help

HEY there...i was just reading this post out of the blue....i can exactly explain ur question as i just went to the orientation for the Spring 2009 and i know how its done..
basically at the start of the orientation they gave us a little index card which had our name and 2 options, trimester and basic on it so we have to "x" out the one we primary choice and give it to them and in a couple of hours...through the break they sort out the two options and they usually equalize by putting some extras into basic - if there were more people who checked out trimester...
so what im trying to say is that MOST upto 95% of the time what you want - YOU GET...and only very few of the students get shifted. which in my case the orientation i went to, only 4 students got pushed...they had trimester as their primary choice but they got moved to basic...
i think they make a list of some kind and figure it out..not really sure how they do it...
I hope the blubber on top makes at least some sense...sorry if it dint...ill be glad to explain...
cheers...

hey everyone! im planning on applying for fall 2010, but like any other pre-nursing student, i'm really worried about my gpa.
which classes are calculated into the overall gpa? is it just the prereqs (math, comm, sci, etc.) or does it include all of the classes we've taken (hist, fine arts, etc.)?
also, is the teas test difficult?
thanks

This link will give you the statistics of those who were accepted into the program so if you want to know where you stand, I find this extremely helpful.
