CSU Long Beach Students???

Published

Can anyone who got accepted to CSULB tell me what your resume looked like when you were accepted? GPA, Teas Scores, Prereq Scores, etc? I'm planning on applying to the program for Fall 2010 and I will still have Physiology in progress when I apply (but everything else completed). Does it make a huge difference if you have a course in progress? I know they count it as a C. I'm just wondering what my chances are of getting in, i know its really competetive, but then again they let in 90 students per semester which is pretty good for a CSU.

Thanks for the help!!

Thank you so much!

A couple more questions..

Were you in the semester or trimester program? and how did you like it versus your thoughts about the other?

Where did you do clinicals? and how are the teachers?

I visited the campus over the summer and it was by far my favorite out of all the southern california CSUs. We actually visited it for my brother (drama major) and it just made me want to go there more than I already did. My mind keeps going back and fourth from CSULB and SFSU, which is funny because my brother wanted to go to CSULB initially and ended up deciding to go to SFSU because they weren't taking spring transfers... ironic. (haha, sorry if thats to much info, i just realized that).

I also was wondering, how demanding is the schedule, like, if i wanted to take other classes as well. I might have some GE courses left to do, but I'd also like to take some dance clases if I have time. What do you think?

Thanks for all your help. I got so caught up with this site I forgot I need to get going to the hospital I volunteer at today.

I'll be checking back soon.

Ooh, I just thought of one more, do you think working as a CNA would be benefical before nursing school, that is my plan, and I know it doesn't count for admission, but just curious what you think. Thanks!

I am in the trimester program, which I am so happy with. If you are in the trimester, you are done in 2 years (have to take summer school) versus 3 years (basic program doesn't have to take summer school). If you are in the trimester, most of your clinicals will be at Long Beach Memorial (since they have a lil aggreement for the trimester students) and if you are in the basic program, you have clinicals all over (which I hear is good since you get to experience many diff hospitals). Since I did most of my hospital clinicals at LBMMC, we had clinical teachers who are employed through LBMMC and CSULB so they know the facility well and actually have their offices at the hospital. I LOVED every one of my clinical teachers at LBMMC.

The schedule is hard at the beginning but gets easier towards the end. You should have room to fit in a GE each semester, depending on how much stress you can take :)

I would recommend doing the CNA thing during school, because it helps you get experience with basic care and stuff. My friend did it starting her 4th semester and she enjoys it alot.. I think the first three semesters it would be hard to have a job, but after that it gets a lil easier.

how is your pay for those two years...im jus curious as ive been accepted for the BSN that starts in spring 09.....

so again, do you get paid for those two years? if yes, how much?

your reply will help a ton..thanks alot...

Since I am contracted with LBMMC, I get a 'stipend' for each semester to cover books/tuition/etc.. It is $3500 a semster, WITH taxes taken out. So yeah. But I do owe them two years of my time when I graduate so that is the other part.

Also, does Long Beach Memorial have a limit to how many students they make that deal with? It seems like an awful lot of students to to that for every semester.

I dont think so. I think maybe 25 in my semester group have signed the contract.

But LBMMC lets ALL trimester students do their clinicals there, so there are a ton of students doing clinicals, regardless if they signed the contract or not.

thanks alot for replying, so your saying that when youre doing the classes for BSN, LBMMC pays $3500 for each semester. is that enough for covering the costs? does anything remain after paying the costs?

Thanks

Also, I saw in another thread that Long Beach Memorial pays their new grad nurses about 28.50. This was about a year ago, so it may have changed some, but its probably in the same ballpark. Its not that great, but its also a REALLY good hospital, everyone seems to love it.

thanks alot, so $28.50 an hour? this is after you finished the degree right. when do u actually start your 2 years contract at lbmmc, is it after you finish the nclex or immediately after your done with school (after last semester)

yeah that is what the people on the thread i was reading said, 28.50/hr. again this was like a year ago, so it may have increased some since then.

I would guess that you would start working at lbmmc right after you graduate. usually there is a slight waiting period inbetween when you graduate and when you take/get the results from the NCLEX. i think you can get a interim permit during that time and being working right away.

This is what the board of registered nursing says:

"Applicants who have recently graduated from a registered nursing program, and have not taken the NCLEX-RN are eligible for an interim permit (IP). An interim permit is not renewable and is in effect to the expiration date or until the results of the examination are mailed, at which time it becomes null and void."

Update about Long Beach Memorial Medical Center from the California Nurses Association:

October 2, 2008

"Nurses at one of the region's biggest private hospitals have worked out a tentative contract with management. KPCC's Cheryl Devall has more about the labor picture at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Cheryl Devall: The proposed three-year contract includes higher wages, along with increased nurse-to-patient ratios at the hospital. The agreement would affect about 1800 registered nurses.

A statement from their union, the California Nurses Association, said the tentative contract would ensure that new technology at the hospital would supplement, not supplant, nurses' professional judgment in determining what's best for patients.

The contract includes average salary increases of 18 percent over three years. A hospital statement read in part: "We are hopeful our nurses at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center will ratify this new contract so that we might move forward together and provide the best healthcare available."

Long Beach Memorial has had a history of tension with its union nurses. Six years ago, following stalled contract talks, they walked out on strike twice over pension benefits, salaries for more experienced nurses, and staffing ratios.

The present nursing staff plans to vote on whether to ratify the contract next week."

looks like wages will be going up soon. hope this helps!

Well it all depends... On where you live, if you are working, if you already have supplies (stethescope, blood pressure cuff, etc)... The books, uniform, supplies the first semester cost the most, so there isn't much left with the stipend.. But the other semesters I think there is a good amount left. But it is definately not for rent or anything else, as it won't cover much, but maybe a trip to the grocery store from what's left over lol. Soo I don't know your situation but it's not going to keep you out of debt, but it will help take the edge off the financial burdern of nursing school.

Hope that makes sense

I think you start after you finish the NCLEX, which is like a month or two after graduation. We graduate Dec 19th but I dont think we take the NCLEX until late Feb. Depends on which semester you graduate...

Okay I have a question I'm not sure any of you will be able to answer..

So, I figured if i do micro and stats over the summer, I'll be able to apply for Spring 2010 instead of Fall. My question is, if I do not get accepted not the nursing program, I will want to apply again for Fall, but the application deadline for fall admission to the CSU is November 30th, and I'm not sure if I'll have gotten my letter of denial or acceptance for Spring semester to know whether or not to apply again.

So, I'm assuming I'll get accepted into the university either way, but if I don't get accepted to the NS the first time around, by the time I find out I have not been accepted, it will be to late to apply to the university.

So what do I do if this happens. If the first time I apply, and I do get into the CSU and not the NS, will it cross over to the Fall semester? Because it'll be to late to apply again, once i've heard from the nursing program.

Sorry if I repeated myself a lot, I was trying to word it in a way that would make sense, so I don tknow if you got it.

Thanks for the help though.

Firstly i don't think you should worry about getting to know if you're accepted or not...i got accepted into the Nursing program for Spring 2009 and i got to know the decision Oct 15 the very same day they made the decision...so if the deadline for application is Nov 30 I'm quiet sure u have ample time to make all the preparations...

here is one thing u could do...u can apply for spring and then call them after u applied and check when they make the decision and then call back to c if you've been accepted or not accepted...u would receive and email if you've been accepted so don't worry...and den apply for fall if necessary...

but for the application to the university i dont know....most of the campuses under CSU have a rule like if u dont do any courses the semester you have been enrolled for then you're admission will get cancelled and you will have to apply again...but i might also b wrong....so just in case...JUST IN CASE...u dont get accepted to the program at least register for 1 course and do it, if you really think u can get accepted into the nursing program....

good luck....n take care...

hope this helped...

Thanks Crissy

I didn't know that you would hear back from them so soon. The website says that they send notifications the 4th week of November. Thats why I was worried about the CSU deadline, because by the time I knew if i was in or not, if i was not, it'd be past the deadline to reapply to the CSU. Thanks

And the only thing about enrolling in a class is that I live in northern california and I wouldn't move down there unless I knew I was accepted into the nursing program.

Anyways, we'll see how it goes

Good Luck! Did you decide to attend CSULB? Or did you get accepted somewhere else?
