CRNE Prep Group in Toronto or Ottawa - October 2011

World Canada CRNE

Published

Hey everyone, I was wondering if there are any people who want to start a CRNE (Canadian Registered Nurses Exam) Prep group or study group, whatever you may call it.

I just graduated and am scheduled to write in October. The reason why I wrote Toronto or Ottawa, is that I presently work and live in Toronto, having just graduated from Ryerson. I make it back home to Ottawa on the weekends, so am planning on hardcore studying in both cities!!!!!!

If we make a group, we can compile CRNE questions and go over material together. Any ideas would be very helpful. I heard the test is really hard now, and I personally know some people who have failed. Let me know, we can start as soon as July!

I already message you but you won't reply!

hello guys,

i m from surrey bc,,,is anyone here in bc (surrey)wants to have group study and if anyone knows about prep courses in vancouver...pls reply...

I have been following many crne support groups and looking for watermeloncandy in the hopes to get some reviewing notes from her/him. I've failed the exam twice, by 4 points and 1 point. I'm in huge distress since learning the result. I have signed up for two prep courses which will be in sept. I'm studying CNA and codes of ethics. Many people have suggested the ABCs, nursing process, steps on approaching the questions, and books. The exam is not based on memorizing. Its about knowledge/comprehension, application and critical thinking. Its funny how I ran out of time the first time and I filled in the last 20 questions with random numbers and still almost got the same result as my second attempt. I'm speechless.

Have you looked at which taxonomy you did not do well on? I find that a lot of people have knowledge down pat, it's the application and critical thinking that are challenging for a lot of people I talked to.

I found that some questions on the exam were not necessarily ABC questions but you have to have an idea of the overall picture. For example, just because they have SOB it doesn't mean you give them O2 right away. You have to assess why they're having SOB. It can be due to a lot of things such as pain, asthma etc. which can be treated accordingly with medication/positioning/other therapeutic methods.

Do you underline or circle keywords? Maybe rephrasing the question in your head could help you answer the question.

Hi 27400,

Yes, you are correct. I scored low on application and critical thinking by a difference of 9 and 5 (when compared to score of passing candidates) respectively. I scored the lowest on health and wellness (difference of 8). I agree with you that assessment is always the first thing you do prior to an intervention. However, not all questions are like that. It requires you to critically think according to what they think is right. I've been trying to dissect every question from the CRNE prep guides and my head is starting to hurt.

I am aware that the questions are not all the same but I find the nursing process can be applied to ALL critical thinking and application questions. What is the purpose of the nursing process? It is to identify the health needs of the patients. In order to assess, plan, implement and evaluate one must use critical thinking to apply their knowledge on to the given situation.

Anyway, I wish you well with your studying. I hope you are successful the third time around. It must be really draining looking at similar material over and over again.

Hello everyone:

I would like to give you also some advice for the crne exam in october or february. All the resources that you all mentioned are definately a must to study inside out like the CRNE prep guides and mock tests you can purchase from the CNA online, the mosbys comprehensive review and prep guides, lippincott, your notes from med-surg courses may be helpful, study groups and prep courses. They are all very useful and proven to work and increases your chances to pass the crne.

In addition to all the resources you are planning to use, My advice to you will be to create a schedule that works for you and dedicate every single day 4-6-9 hours per day to review and do mock questions, do as many questions as possible, do 2,3,4 thousand questions whatever you are comfortable with and whatever your time allows you until you feel you are getting it, don't take a break until this is done. I don't mean to be exaggerated but in all honesty for some of us that is the amount of work and time needed to make this final step to conquer the registration.

All the exam is based on Critical Thinking, Safety first, and Health promotion. I don't mean to sound rude but for the ones that are tested in October, I would not recommend to take summer vacation at this moment in time because you will be cutting it short trust me. In order to apply critical thinking in every question, You still need to remember all your body of knowledge that was taught to you in 4 years and a lot of your time and dedication and discipline is needed it to accomplish that.

So, don't take it easy but study everyday, review everyday, do questions everyday and help each other and your chances to pass this exam will be greater!!!don't hesitate to ask me any questions I will be happy to help you. Good luck to all future candidates in october!! You can do it :)

Hi Cojute2011,

I was just wondering do you know if the test in October is harder? I am scared now.

Specializes in geriatrics.

Each is exam is scored in a way that ensures fairness for all candidates regardless of the version you're writing. I also would not suggest studying more than 4 or 5 hours a day, otherwise you'll be risking burnout. Make sure you have free time and rest as well. Many people tend to make more out of this exam than necessary. Yes, you must prepare thoroughly. But....be smart about it.

Hi joanna73,

Isn't the passing mark also depends on how many people write the test and how smart the candidates are?
