CRNA school policy

a little background on me, i am a male, age 25, who previously went to NIU for computer science and subsequently failed out. I am currently attending a community college for my ADN. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA, however my previous poor grades (1.5gpa) at NIU appear to prevent a problem for future grad school. At my current school i have a good gpa (i love this stuff) but this will not be enough to bring my cumulative gpa to the necessary 3.0. Is crna school an impossibility for me?

alphozo...

nothing is impossible...but that is a ways down the road...i would concentrate on getting good grades, learning all you can and obtaining a position that affords alot of learning....

alphozo,

Your past is your past. I went to university for 3 years before I went into my diploma RN program. My GPA was about 2.0. I started putting some effort in while in nursing school and did well and when I went back for my BSN I had a 3.9. The schools I applied to never calculated my cumulative from the time I started college 15 years ago (neither have I), they looked at the big picture and saw I did well in nursing. I had no problem getting into CRNA school. Point is, don't stress over an old GPA. Kick butt in your ADN and BSN and prove you can do it. Work hard and get good expereince and CRNA school will be in your future. Best of luck.

thank you for the vote of confidence, ive been dwelling alot on this lately and its been i big burden. How does the grad school calculate GPA? do they just use nursing school grades? The school that i screwed up in doesnt have any classes that i need so if i didnt send them my transcripts... one of my friends almost didnt graduate for doing that so im not going to risk it. One of my father's friends is a nurse and he told me that crna is very difficult to get into, is this true or more hype like everything else?

Go for it,

I earned a 1.9 GPA during my first attempt at college. My total GPA on application, was 3.1, but was much higher, if you only looked a the nursing degree.

Currently, I am an SRNA, set to graduate in December.

Some programs look at your last 120 hours of college work so between the ADN and BSN you have plenty of opportunity to demonstrate your more recent abilities to meet academic demands. Do the very best you can, keep your mind open to possibilities within nursing and don't waste energy over stuff you cannot change (the Past)!!!!!! Good Luck;)

I graduated from NIU in dec. 2000. I'm a second year SRNA at Bradley U. Good luck and hang in there.

randy

i was looking at bradley too (long time away though) peoria is a fun town and very cheap to live in too (big als)

In my case, similar to yours, I think a poor start can prove to be a positive. Doing well from here out (straight A's if possible) will prove how much you want this. It shows that once you set your mind to something, you can do it. I started with a 1.0 or less at LSU over the first 3 semesters and rebounded with a 3.81 since then - I'm set to start Anesthesia school this summer. While it is tough to start out in such a big hole, you can come through it and look better for having done so.

Okay Al - I get the moniker. I work in Peoria at the level one trauma center. Several of my fellow ER RNs are at the CRNA school at Bradley. Personally - never wanted to do CRNA but more power to you guys/gals! BTW - Peoria is more than Big ALs!
