crna school and iv skills

Published

I'm wondering if any crnas or srnas can give me a little insight. I am currently working in NICU and MSICU, but I do not have good IV SKILLS. Usually the patients have Central lines and I do not have much experience. Will I have a hard time if I entered CRNA program, or would you say that in the program, they will fully train me and enhance my confidence? Any suggestions??

thanks for the reply and encouragement! appreciate it!

and this is to CRNA, DNSc's reply. i think that sounded a little condescending. and although it may be a basic skill, it is still a skill, that is learned on many different levels. give the inexperienced some slack. i'm sure you were in a similar boat at one time or another.

The issue is not the inexperience- the issue is figuring what one's weaknesses are and then assertively taking steps to improve yourself rather then passively waiting to be "fixed".

This is a skill that the OP has the opportunity to learn before a CRNA program and turn the experience into an example of realistic self assessment of her/his weaknesses and what she/he has done to improve in preparation for the CRNA program. This will go a lot further with an admission committee than what you suggest, which is really glossing over or blowing the question off.:uhoh3:

I figure when your are in the OR sweating bullets infront of your CRNA about a simple IV start you will wish you gave it the attention it deserved prior to school.

I currently work in a peds ER and in one shift , i can't even count how many IV's I have to start. If you are working in a hospital , especially one with a peds er, talk to that nurse manager and see if you can spend one day down there where all you do is start ivs. That would give you a lot of experience to the point where you will fill comfortable with it.

I know how you feel when you work in an ICU, pt all have central lines or come up with IV's. I took this ER job for something different and that is a big plus. Good luck!
