Hi! Anyone out there working at Columbus Regional Hospital or Schneck Medical Center in Seymour? I'm considering working at one of these places and would like to hear some opinions on the working environment, specifically how new graduates are treated! What's orientation like and how many patients are assigned to a new nurse? (Just typical questions like these!) Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Never worked at either but have many friends who work at CRH and some that worked at Seymour. The ones that worked at Schneck hated it and everyone who worked at CRH loved it. I have a friend who is married to a military man (army) and he was deployed at the time to Iraq and never knew when he would get his leave. They told her that if he showed up one day, she could take the full 2 weeks off that he was home. Her NM said that everyone works together and realizes that family and personal matters arise and no one complains if they have to work extra. My friend says it was like working with family. She worked in oncology/med surg and she said it was always well staffed. My cousin also worked there as a new grad and says she received a very thorough orientation - 1-2 months of orientation. They are a magnet hospital.
On the other hand, I heard that Schneck doesn't treat their employees well. But, everyone is different and you may like Schneck. Interview at both places and see which one you like the best. I don't know about you but I can tell right away in an interview if I'm going to like the place or not.

I worked at CRH on the progressive care unit for 4 years while I went to school. When I graduated a new manager was hired and many of the staff was leaving due to burn out. I wanted to transfer to the cardiovascular unit. I shadowed there and had a interview but the manager of that unit wanted me to spend more time on the progressive care unit. She said she didn't hire new grads (which I later learned was a lie). I quit and starting working at St. Vincent Indianapolis.
St. V's was kind enough to let me transfer to cardiac recovery after 5 months on cardiac medical (I was very unhappy on that unit). Apparantly even though CRH is a magnet hospital they do not care about nurse retention. I am on rehirable status though.
I am bitter so take my words lightly :) When I visit the progressive care unit I don't know much of the staff anymore so maybe it is different now.
I don't know anything about Schneck.

I worked at CRH for 10 yrs, and many of the nurses I worked with left Seymour to work at CRH, so I guess that tells you something! LOL
I feel the need to defend a few things the previous poster stated. The new NM on the PCU was left a mess by the previous NM. People were leaving, but once she adjusted to her new role and the staff adjusted to her, it is now a very pleasant floor to work on.
I also feel the need to defend the NM of the CVU. She doesn't hire new hires, if she can help it. I transferred to that unit after working 3 years in ICU and 5 years in the cath lab, and I was overwhelmed at times -- and I am a very seasoned nurse! She believes, as I do, it isn't a place for a new graduate. If she hired a new grad in the past, I am sure it was because she was desperate for staff -- it happens.
I have been a nurse for several years and have worked at Methodist, Wishard, and St Francis Hospitals. I keep coming back to CRH. I'm not sure why you feel they don't care about retention -- I felt they were bending over backwards to keep me there. I am currently part owner of my own infusion nurse agency and recently quit CRH to do this full-time. But if my business fails, or I decide to go back to the bedside -- I'll go back to CRH.
I should mention, though -- CRH has the worst human resources dept -- they are so slow!! But once you get through the hiring process and onto your unit, the people at CRH are a great group.

Just be advised that they are in the process of hiring a new CEO and I have a feeling that a lot of the people in upper management will be replaced. For the sake of some departments I hope so, for others, it could be detrimental.

The new NM was rude to me several times. They hired new grads through the magnet orientation program I believe. So say what you will, I still believe I was treated rudely and unfairly.
By the way, I graduated last May and am working in cardiac recovery at St. Vincent. I'm working hard and learning and am doing great. It is the place for me.

Don't feel bad. I saw one of the best nurses that hospital ever had get fired by the NM because of a couple of whiny, crybaby complaints against her that were so stupid it was ridiculous and very unfair. That nurse wasn't the only long time employee that was got rid of. It was rumored that the hospital was trying to cut cost by cutting out some of the staff that had a lot of seniority and therefore made the highest dollar amount. Seeing the staff members that got fired for little or no reason made me feel like it was pretty close to the truth. and yes, I was treated unfairly by the NM I worked for and left. (the same NM who fired the seasoned nurse). (not the same one you worked for BTW) I'm glad you like it where you work though.
CRH is like anywhere else. It has it's good points and it has it's bad points. There are people who love working there and people who hate working there, just as I imagine there are people who love Scheck and some who hate Schneck.
In all honesty, if I could make what I am making now, I wouldn't mind going back to CRH, only I would never go back to the same department while the current NM is there.
Good luck on your career!!
