Hi pacificwhales,

I also was thinking about Crescent city. I tried to find out some first-hand information about the hospital there without much luck. I think it is a very small community and as a new grad you will not get the same experience you can find at some major metropolitan hospitals. Moreover, when I read through threads on city-data, it seemed like the town is very remote with very limited shopping and entertainment options.

Please let me know if you find out anything else about the hospital and community itself.

Good luck.

I had clinicals at Sutter Coast and I thought it was a great hospital. They offer loan forgiveness because it is in a rural area. I wouldn't really want to live in Crescent City though.....I prefer the sun and the heat.....other than that it seemed like an ok place. I think that practicing nursing in a rural area actually gives you a better overall experience. The floors aren't separated out so much so you get to work with nurses with more broader knowledge base and you have a wider variety of patients.

Love their loan forgiveness program, and that they are the redwood forest headquarters. How far are they away from Redding and Portland? Plus what is the rent like. I am moving from Ohio, but I lived in Sacramento, Santa Cruz, and Palm Springs for 15 years. My point, I want to pay off my loans for 2 degrees, live in a nice country for a year, and then work somewhere near the coast WITHOUT SPENDING 2k for rent per month like in Bay Area. What is the raining season like? Does it rain all the time? I am asking for a scoop. Please write back.

I lived an hour and a half south of Crescent City for the past 3 years (Arcata). The rainy season is long. It is rainy/overcast like Oct to April. Summer months are humid but overcast and it is mostly warm and clear August and September....not enough sun and warmth for me. I don't know how affordable housing is since I never lived there and I don't know what they pay new grads. I would guess a decent 2-3 bedroom house to rent would be at least 1100/month. To get to Redding from Crescent City taking 101 south to 299 it would take about 4.5 hours. I don't know about Portland. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. I must admit that all of the rain makes for a very beautiful landscape.

Black Sea Pebble are you still interested in the Crescent City or are you looking somewhere else?

thanks

Hello,

I just graduated from College of the Redwoods in Eureka and did 6 weeks of clinical in Crescent City. Sutter Coast is a GREAT place to work! They work in teams, CNA, LVN, RN and unit clerk that can act as CNA if needed. The pay at Sutter coast is very nice compared to the coast of living up there. Most people at the hospital don't actually live in Creasent city but rather near by Brooking, Or. They have new houses, no tax, and warmer weather. They call it a banana belt. Meaning the curve there is mostly sunny. they hired between 5-6 new grads from out class. Sutter coast was one of the best hospital i ever worked at in the true Northern California. Honestly , I would of applied there and worked there if my true calling wasn't the SF bay area.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

By the way sutter paid for our hotel, food, and gas.

Yes, I am still looking for a position at Sutter in Crescent. I REALLY, REALLY need a day position though (small baby at home and I don't function well after 2200). I WOULD LOVE TO RELOCATE TO CRESCENT! Please keep me posted!

Good luck!:p

Dearhearts and Black Sea Pebble,

thank you for your posts very much. Black Sea Pebble...Crescent City did offer me a day position you know. Weird! Did they not offer you a day position? You should post a personal email or call me. Strange stuff... and also thank you for the posting about the border there called a banana border in Oregon. Will anyone elaborate on the rentals near Crescent City and the area? :redbeathe

Pacificwhales,

I think you can find info on rentals through Remaxx or craigslist. I'll PM you.

Good night.
