Hi! I hope I'm putting this in the right place, but I've been wondering if anyone else has dealt with this. I'm trying to apply for RN by exam, and I had to consent to the Adam Walsh background check. More than 10 years ago DCF got involved with my family because my (now) ex-husband assaulted my infant, apparently a couple times. It was completely unknown to me, as I was at work when it happened, but she appeared sick, so I was bringing her to her pediatrician and the ER several times; it was only after my ex said she fell off the bed, that the ER finally did a CT, and found subdural hematomas. Very obviously, DCF got involved, initially took custody (I got custody back at the 72 hour hearing, after my ex confessed and I filed for separation). Because it took so long for him to confess, DCF treated us both as perpetrators and supported the Care and Protection. He was ultimately charged and convicted of his crimes, and my child is doing really great these days with no residuals (thank god!!!).
Any way... apparently my name came up on the DCF registry as being part of a protective services case, and now my application for licensure by exam is under review. With Good Moral Character, there is a list of items that the Board wants, but there is absolutely no information for individuals who show up on the Registry but have no criminal history. Does anyone know how long the review will take, or what they might want for documentation? I'm trying to pace myself studying for the NCLEX, and wonder if they will even let me? (I assume I'm listed as "neglectful" for "failing to keep the child safe", which I already feel sooo much guilt for, even though I was at work when it happened.) As additional info, I do currently work with children, and my history has never been a problem...
I believe it's nationwide but not 100% sure. I do know that Massachusetts only started doing this check for nursing grads back in December or January. I respect why this background check has been implemented but for those of us that are "flagged" from a single incident 10+ years ago, it's very frustrating and extremely embarrassing. I can only hope they can start picking up the pace on these so called investigations so we can take our NCLEX ASAP!! ?
I believe it's a state by state thing, but I only know about Massachusetts. My case is six years old and I just don't have the time to wait bec they are so backed up with these flags. I understand why it's implemented too, but they should at least have the help they need so that it can be investigated in a timely manner. I think that if you are looking for the licensing information for California you will need to call the board in your state.
Hi, I’m in almost the same exact boat. No one from the board has contacted me. But my ATT was being held up despite PCS saying my review was complete. After 2 hours on hold I finally got someone from PCS on the phone. They said my application was under CPS review. I have called and emailed the MA board with zero response. It’s stemming from an issue with my ex husband. But since the board has not informed of anything I feel helpless. I’m currently an LPn and renewed my license recently without issue so it’s weird that this is holding me up from RN exam. Please let me know how you all make out. I’d appreciate any advice.
I am currently in the same situation. CPS from 2006 due to my fiancé and I yelling in front of the kids. They filed neglect on me, which was done by the intake worker, and the worker that I met with after actually said that she didn’t even feel that this case should be open. I was 5 months pregnant at the time and my fiancé’s mother was on life support in the hospital so I was a tad emotional and they found an issue with me crying, can’t always control hormones. I called PCS after the final review was “completed” and now I wait. I am thinking of contacting a lawyer because my loans will be due soon and I will need my nursing income to cover them. Can someone please give me a little input into the process. How long was it after you applied before you got any correspondence from the board? I’m at wits end.
Hi just applied with PCS June 28 2021 and just found out I’m on cps review. The board just received the notification today Aug 6 2021. And now I’m on board review. Domestic violence relationship almost 10 years. I’m lucky I’m alive, I’ve changed my life. I have nothing with child protective services abusing my children . Do have a few neglects for being in the relationship. I have move on with my life with children I made a better life for them including going to school for two years for LPN. To find out I can’t take NCLEX . Still haven’t received anything from the BON. Has anybody gone through the whole process and can let any of us know how it went
So sorry to hear about your case!! I'm not sure how others have been doing, but I'm still waiting. The last time I called, the person told me basically that they are so overwhelmed with cases, that it's taking longer than they expected. I'm just about to hit the 6 month mark from when I applied. My best suggestion is to see if you can get student loans into deferment; and if possible, consider getting licensed in a different state and apply for reciprocity. If I knew it would take this long, I would have applied out of state and just commuted. You just have to call Pearson and ask if they can send your NCLEX results somewhere else, and then apply to the different state. From there, I'd guess notify PCS. Unfortunately, I still haven't gotten any feedback on what that does to the current Massachusetts application.
Since it's a national test, it's basically the same exam in every state, so I was told that for a fee, Pearson can change which state receives the results. Definitely talk to your school to be sure, because I truly don't know the repercussions to the current Mass app, but it's worth investigating..

So weird. I cant find anything online stating the BON recently added the adam walsh check as a part of the livescan. Is this new requirement nation wide, or state by state? Does anyone have a link?
