CPR, EKG & ACLS QUESTIONS?????

Published

hello everyone how goes it out there. well i am planning on going in to either CTU or CCU and to get my cpr updated my ekg cert. and acls cert. i have the oppertunity to take the cpr on 10/10 which is not an issue. but i want to sign up for the basic EKG class on 10/16 then sign up for the ACLS class on the 10/22-23rd. the question is does this schedule seem workable? just dont know how much info is in the acls class. you see after i pay and sign up they send me pre study material. just want to know if there is enough time to finish all the material needed for the pre study stuff between the EKG class and the ACLS class. any thoughts or input for anyone who has taken it before??

:balloons: Hello, Mr. RN and CA angel lover,:balloons:

I am a firm believer of the nurse taking the EKG and/or dysrhythmia course prior to the ACLS.

I think 6 days apart is plenty of time. Now DON'T panic when you get the ACLS book and all that is going to be required of you. It is intimidating, but, you can do it. If you have questions, I can assist you. I teach ACLS EP and PALS just about every weekend.

Now, IF and only IF the Angels beat the Yanks, all bets are off.............:chuckle

Hello there my fellow RN, nice to hear from you. And I am sure I will have a question or two thanks for the offer. I will no doubt take advantage of the offer.

I would however like correct your misspellings. It should read, "Now, WHEN and only WHEN the Angels beat the Yanks, all bets are FINAL".:w00t:

I am in a fix, I am just a NA and I signed up for ACLS (had BLS) thinking that it was just the next step. Got the book and LOVE this stuff....eating it up...but it became apparent real early on: is it really OK for me to even take this course? I cant give meds, or do any thing invasive like intubation: I am not licensed. I really was taking this so I wouldn't be a total idiot if I could get a job in the hospital, just so I know how to stay out of the way! I just don't want to be a pain in the class!

Oh, yeah, did I mention I love this? The book is so well written.

ACLS is not the impossible task that it was years ago. No one fails an ACLS course these days - you're invited back to remediate.

So long as you're not taking a Paramedic ACLS course, you've got it made (we still torture each other at the ambulance)!

Hello, chadash,

When the individual is in VT, it is referred to as monomorphic or polymorphic. Usually you will see the monomorphic VT in structurally normal hearts. The individual in polymorphic VT may have genetic abnormalities, short QT syndrome, inherited (familial) VT, and the like. In monomorphic VT, the ECG patterns stay the same. In polymorphic VT, the QRS complex varies from beat to beat.

Now, when polymorphic VT is observed with a prolonged QT, it is usually called Torsades de Pointes. Runs of polymorphic VT with a prolonged QT (Torsades), Magnesium can be tried. You commonly see this in the alcholoic patient. Mag is indeed given to the individual with hypomag.

so torsades is polymorphic vt with prolonged qt....and mag helps even when there doesnt appear to be hypomag? what does magnesium actually do?
