COVID - Cancelled clinicals

Published

My school has decided to extend Spring break and move to online format after that because of the covid pandemic. Our clinicals have been cancelled as well, so we are to create "clinical" activities for students to complete at home in their place. These are activities that should take the students a number of hours to "make up" their clinical time they are missing and hopefully spur some critical thinking. These can be case studies, NCLEX questions where they answer the question and provide rationale, matching of diseases and signature symptoms with follow up definitions, etc.

What do you guys do at your schools when you have to miss clinical days?

Specializes in CCMA, CNA.

I am set to graduate in May also. Our clinical have been canceled but I rather have safety first! If we must delay, it will be okay!

Specializes in MICU, SICU, Neuro ICU, Trauma ICU,.

We are using Lippincott VSims, ATI simulations, and case study work. I love the NCLEX questions and rationales though- I may use those as well.

We are doing a combination of vSims and meeting with our students weekly in clinical sessions. During the sessions. We debrief their vSim, go over case studies, and concept map. I’ve also been using virtual healthcare experience from Ryerson University and a couple of other similar online sims during the sessions with the students.

Hey check out the website. They are offering free student accounts for schools or clinical sites that have been effected by COVID19. I just came across it and remembered this thread.

https://nursing.com/lp/covid/

They have a thousands of videos and lessons on different clinical skills and medical concepts.

Our program did online clinical for now. It's been a lot more reading and zoom meetings!! We are set to go back into clinical in June, however I don't know if I feel safe. I see mixed messages online about safety for healthcare workers. How do you guys feel about it?!

I want safety first as well. They are about to send us back to in person clinical and I'm really not sure that it is safe. Did they let you guys back in yet?

Do you know if you are allowed to use face masks while on clinical rotation? If it is recommended to be worn in public by the CDC I would assume it is a reasonable protective measure to use while on clinical rotations.

They didn’t mention about having us wear masks in clinical. I think they’ll provide surgical masks I assume but not n95. And also, they said we won’t be with known covid-19 patients so I think they will not require PPE. It makes me nervous still....

If you are allowed to wear surgical masks that would be great. That would definitely help reduce your risk of coming into contact with infectious droplets. I plan on having a little hand held purell dispenser to disinfect my hands before touching my face or eating. I am starting rotations in late August and will be attending orientation in July. I would be happy with wearing surgical masks while on clinical rotations or at least use my own mask until a vaccine is produced. Hopefully a vaccine will be available by the end of the year.

Galen College has provided Virtual Simulation through Wolters Klower for the entire Fall semester. We have used a combination of case studies and virtual simulations for clinical this quarter. The KY state board of nursing has approved this and we will be starting our next quarter online as well.
