I worked on a surgical unit some years ago where we had a doctor who order Coude's frequently for his BPH patients. The policy on using them shouldn't be any different than any other foley catheter. The Coude tip is an angled tip designed to make insertion into the urethra easier, supposedly. We inserted them just like any other foley catheter (we did not use a stylus). Nurses shouldn't be inserting them with the stylus; the doctor should be doing those insertions. This same surgeon also instructed us to inject the 10cc of sterile lubricating gel directly into the urethra prior to insertion rather than gooing up the catheter itself.
