cost of living in nsw australia

Published

Dear ALL,

 Was wondering if anyone could help.

I am thinking about moving to new south wales. I am trying to compare living costs and was wondering if anyone can help.Especially if water rates are included in council rates in nsw. Also what are the average costs for car/house/contents insurance ,cost of a second hand car, etc.If anyone has moved from england to nsw i would be very interested to talk to them, especially if they moved with children :) .

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Ewol - I haven't lived or moved from England - but I do live in NSW - have lived in a number of different locations in NSW. In terms of cost of living the big question is - where in NSW. With the house being the biggest pasrt of cost consider that there is a difference between a modest 3 bed house in sydney costing around $500,000 where up the north coast and inland (Glenn Inness) for example the same house will cost around 150,000. So it depends where in the state in terms of housing. Water/electricity/ rates are all seperate costs. you can work on rates being roughly $100 per month, water & electricity again depend on you and how you live (we spend roughly $15/month on water, $50/mnth on electricity - four two young children & 2 adults). Nurses make a fairly good wage (me)- similar to that of teachers (my wife). With overtime, penalties and allowances I grossed 80,000plus last year.... this year I havent done overtime & now work more days (so less penalty rates) and will earn around $60,000. We live on the central coast - & purchased a 4 bedroom home 6 months ago for just on $300,000 - so the home cost 5times my annual gross. (15 years ago homes where about 3.5times the annual gross of a nurse in the same area). Cost of a car - what condition are you interested in - roadworthy & will last at least 12months - about 2,000 through to the sky - general between 5-10,000 will get a reasonable second hand - nothing fancy but reliably & sound.

Generally with us both working we can take home 3300/fortnight, take out 1000 mortage, regular bills around 300 some fun money 200, school fees of a 200(our kids are in priate school), food money 500, car & petrol 200, cedit cards & helping out parents 200 and we are left with around 700 play money a fortnight (which currently is paying extra off the mortgage). We don't have a second car though (to save money & stay fit I pushbike to work), we only eat out once per week, kids & I are involved with a bike club (minimal activity cost).

I would say that we live comfortably - but don't waste to much money.

hope this helps...

Cheers

Peter

I'm a nurse from the Philippines. I intend to go to Victoria next year to take a 3-4 month bridging program. I would like to ask how much the living cost is in Victoria for an average student. Thanks for your help.
