I have worked in a 1300 bed max security female state facility for > than 10 years. We have had only 3 sucessful suicides in that time ( all hangings) There have been 4 unsucessful attempt in that time. The risks for suicide is greatest within 48 hours of admission in county facilities for a number of reason ie coming of drugs and ETOH, initial shame and embarrasment.

All correctional employess are give yearly education on suicide prevention all new intakes are screened for suicide risk on admission.

While i work at a female facility I understande men have a higher suicide rate Yet i think the statistics for our state for the previous year wa sthat there was a total of 25 suicides for a total statewide inmate pop od > 45,000 inmates
