I applied for a job at a local prison but the pay was much lower than I expected and i was nervous about that type of work as i tend to trust people I'm caring for, so i declined the job. I'm wondering what pay most of you are getting

Kimprn,
(I know it's a longshot, this thread ended in March!)
I am an RN trying to get a contract with probably the same place (NMR?) that you posted about. I want to work in the Sacramento area; there are two facilities there. I feel that my qualifications and experience are very good, and I am wanting the contract because I want to work as an independant contractor and this was the only place that I'd ever seen an ad for them. If you are still out there, can you give any advice or words of wisdom on my chances? The agency has all my forms, and they "presented" me to Folsom, but say that the prison has no openings right now. (September)
If you prefer, you can email me at [email protected]

I am administrator at a Florida jail that is (yikes!!!) privatized. We are not the enemy folks!!! Private companies are INVITED into the systems because of the state/county reluctance to pay, monitor, support and manage health care, not to mention the supposed financial advantages of not running their own medical units. Much to everyone's surprise, private companies have benefits, job security, pay raises, etc. Many staff formerly employed with the state/counties going private elect to stay with the companies that take over. Even if a contract is lost, no company has a busload of nurses to bring in if they win the contract! The down side, howver, is the loss of seniority and accompanying benefits for the employees. Even with that disadvantage, the staff usually remains there. Salaries unfortunately are lower than hospitals, etc, but there are benefits, pensions, 401k, hospitalization etc. The average rate for LPN in Fla is 10.00/hr, RN's 20.00 hr. Most have generous differential pay for off shifts. I agree,, it doesn't compete with hospitals, but I for one would never return to hospital nursing after working in corrections. I love it!

HI Shane,
I worked in both corrections and psych nursing. I made at the prison $28.50 hr and at a psych hosp $30.50 hr. That is the East coast Boston area. (20 mins North of Boston.) Feel free to Email me if you have any questions.

I think your salary depends on the company you work for. I work for CMS-correctional medical services. there salary ranges and benefits are wonderful. PHS on the other hand pay terribly. look into CMS employed prisons. Bandaid911

Can anyone give me information on current job (LPN) for correctional nursing in Florida. I worked in Florida before with CMS (2000) and have been living abroad (volunteer works) since then. I kept up with my license and want to return to Florida and back to correctional nursing.
Thanks in advance. You can email me at [email protected]
It depends what part of Florida you are moving back to. In Hernando Co the pay is between 15.00 to 16.00 and hour. Pasco Co and other co. around us pay a little more not sure. This is with CCA. I worked with them for 4 yr and recently quit and went to Home Health Care and love it. Less stress and better hours. I wish you Luck in comeing back to corrections and welcome back to Florida.:balloons:

Hi, Thanks .
what CCA stands for and do they have a website ?
Also, does anyone know of any agencies that send out LPN to correctional facilities in Florida?
I am concerning doing per diem first until I figure out where I want to live in Florida.
CCA...... stands for Corrections Corporation of America and they do have a web site. Just type in Corrections Corporation of America and go to this site and they will tell you where and what openings they have under the employment site. I hope this helps. The insanity is still there, overworked, under paid:uhoh3: and nursing shortage. Hernando Co Jail has around 400 inmates with one to two nurses a shift. Corporate is very stiff on their regulations with little to no overtime accepted but still wants you to get your work done in the timely manner that they require. Very stressful. I will stay in Home Care with less stress and more money. Like I said, I hope this helps you out on the choices that you have to make. I wish you the best of Luck.
Hi, Thanks . I work for Maxim Health Care agency , and they send nurses to the jail to work. Maxim is all over Florida and I do enjoy the agency but I requested that they do not send me to the jail. I prefer home health on a one to one basis. Maxim sends Nurses to the jail or prison . I requested that they dont send me to the jail to work. I enjoy home health and working on a one to one basis. I wish you all the luck.
