Correct Answer of 'Mestinon' for Myasthenia Gravis: Before or with the meals?

Published

Little bit confusing. I'm looking for verification about pyridostigmine (Mestinon) r/t meals: to take it before or with the food?

When is the best time to take this med?

I practiced from Saunders CD 2nd edition on pharm. section.

In question #55 the right answer is option 4: WITH FOOD

However, the question #2 the right answer is: BEFORE MEALS

Both questions here are related to difficulty chewing.

Anyone give me the simple-complete rationale for verification please?

hi:

saunders 4th edition, pg 1042

it states to administer mestinon 30 mins before meals with milk and crackers to reduce gi upset.

i am not sure if this answers your question...but hope it helps.

p.s. feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

We learned that all MG meds should be given about 30 min before meals, since pts often have difficulty with the muscles involved in chewing/swallowing. Per my med-surg book, meds should be scheduled so they peak at meal time (Lewis, Heitkemper, Dirksen, O'Brien, and Bucher; 2007, p. 1556). There are a couple of errors in the Saunders products, you probably found one of them.

Yes, MG have a problem with their muscles so as the muscles for chewing, they must take it 30 minutes before meals so they will be able to chew.

its before meal to improve mastication.
