Considering Occupational Therapy or Dental Medicine after failing out of nursing

Hello,

I have been contemplating other health care professions than just nursing school. I live in the state of Illinois and considering Occupational Therapy or Dental Medicine--

However, I'm not sure the chances of getting into any of these since they have seen I have failed out of a nursing program.

The school that I was thinking of getting into is Midwestern University which accepts a 2.75 at the minimum with 2 recommendation letters.

Since I have the prerequisites finished, I was hoping they would consider my GPA for those since I got all As on them.

Is there a chance for me if they find out I failed out of nursing school? Right now Im in Health Information Management, thinking of raising my GPA through this program, graduating, then applying to these schools. Thanks for your inputs

I guess it depends on what you want to do. Do you want to work with the public? Do you want to work in an office type setting? Health Info Mgmt includes what----maintaining the medical records?? Most of your pre-reqs would satisfy in the OT or PT fields, I am not sure about oral hygiene. You still have a lot of choices. I have to ask, why did you fail out of nsg. school. Is there a learning disability that may have become apparent when you went onto higher education? If that is so, then you may run into problems no matter what you decide. It is OK, you can overcome those or adjust the way you study to be successful. Many people are successful with learning disabilities. Actually, we all learn differently. It is just the teaching methods are usually geared towards ways that the majority learn. Keep your chin up, you just have not found your nich yet. It is not the end of the world, you just need to take a look at what you truly want to do and what you need to do to achieve it. It may take you a little longer than others, but do not get discouraged. Keep on keeping on!!

Good for you on the success of your general education courses! WOO HOO! I would go to the nearest college that you are interested in, bring your transcripts, and see what they offer and what interests you.

I am gonna throw it out there--what about teaching? Occupational therapy is tough--I am not sure I would like that job--look in a search engine to see what they do on a daily basis. Dental hygiene may be an option. Again, look at what they do and if that is something you would like to. If we are talking medical school as in an DMD, see if that is feasible as in can you get a job that will pay your student loans--and there's a LOT.

Finally, look at who is hiring in your area. You can get amazing degrees and still not be able to find a job. If you have enough general ed courses, see about an Associates in Liberal Arts. Then you can move on to a bachelors or masters in whatever you decide.

Best wishes.

I think if there were issues that resulted in being dismissed from your nursing program that are unaddressed, then you can try other programs you still may not succeed. One of the posters gave a great answer on your other thread

I have news for you... Before you can even apply to Dental School you must take pre-med level general chemistry with lab, biology with laboratory , organic chemistry with lab, physics x2 semesters with lab. If you had difficulty with nursing school these courses are probably not for you... Al late a notch or two up from what you took in nursing school (if you took them)
