First of all, I've always wanted to be in a nurse. It's exciting and interactive, unlike other solitary jobs. I'm prepared to study my orifice off and I'm basically, prepared to expect the unexpected. I work well with people and I'm humorous most of the time.
My problem is that whenever I study about the reproductive organs and seeing them, I kind of freak myself out.
I can deal the blood, the shots, the poop, and maybe the puke, but what about those foley catheter insertions?
Am I going to be able to be desentisized about it after a while?
It's not a problem...it's a challenge :).(mine is fingernails coming off...strange?). But, we got to put it aside and get things done.
LOL, ME TOO!!!
I do think we all have one.
I have a few aside from the fingernail thing . . .
FEET!!! Is there any part of the body that is uglier, dirtier, and some times smellier . . . well . . .maybe. I just do not like them. Yes they are very useful. Can't walk without them, and I am glad everyone has them. I double sometimes triple glove if I have to do something with someones nasty feet. I can't even touch my own feet unless I am washing them in the shower, and maybe during the time that they are most definantly clean.
EYE GOOBERS!!! You will never caztch me cleaning out someones goobers. That is one thing I will even PAY someone else to do. Reason # 1 I can't stand to do it. Reason # 2. I can't look at someone with goobers in their eyes, and I have to be able to look at my patient.
VOMITING!!! I am getting better at this one. It's really not the vomit anymore. It is the act of vomiting. It seems that I am in that boat enough due to stomach issues, and it shouldn't phase me. However I do get stuck with the hair holder, bucket holder at times. I can handle it without joining the party. . . but still. . . I can't brink myself to eat a while after that.
Hey the foley cather thing gets me to I felt embarrassed when some nurse couldn't understand how it bothered me even the dummy OK it just a part of your or his body maybe if their face were covered and they couldn't see me I have never done a man or women I guess like anthing after the first time it gets easier I just hope I don't have too
I can handle someone being sick but when my kids got sick it was cleaning up the smell afterwards that got to me
Hey I guess you just need to look at the lighter side of things its not likely that you will ever see that person again
Get started with school and you will find other that feel the same kinda of puts you at ease good luck
i used to be so modest before nursing..now when i go to the gym with my friends they are all hiding in corners doing weird pretzel moves to keep from flashing a bit of skin in the locker room and here i am strippin next to the lockers without a care in the world...they still laugh at me...it's a definite side effect of the job lol, and it extends to include others...you'll get to where you won't even bat an eyelash at anything body related. that includes private body parts, female and male. and you'll be suprised how quickly you get over it.
true that. i went on vacation with a good friend (not a nurse, has a office-computer related job)...tops were optional on the beach, and my friend freaked out the first time we saw some topless women sunbathing--i thought nothing of it, lol.
I never let body parts bother me...My mind either goes to one of two places
A: That could very easily be me needing care and how would I want my nurse to provide that care.
B: I kind of shut it off and go into autopilot mode..I see my patient..I see the body parts that need care or procedure but I don't define my patient by the individual parts.
The only thing I had to get over was ostomy care. First appliance change I did I almost threw up from the smell due to a sensitive nose, but since then I've actually come to consider how important a good sense of smell is in patient care for identifying various problems with patients from knowing who needs a bed linen change before I am fully in their room to getting a whiff of urine coming out of a comode that just tells you a UTI is present.

As a close friend of mine has said to me often, regarding many unpleasant things.... This too shall pass. Works for kidney stone pts too...
Best of luck.
