Considering Med School After Bsn

HI EVERYONE! JUST CURIOUS IF ANYONE OUT THEIR IS ON THE BSN TO MEDICAL SCHOOL ROUTE?/OR CONSIDERING IT? FOR ME, THATS SOMETHING IM CONSIDERING. IM CONSIDERING BECOMING AN ANESTHESIOLOGIST OR A CRNA. I RECEIVED AN "A" IN BIOLOGY IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT I DONT WANT TO MAJOR IN IT DURING COLLEGE THIS FALL. WITH A MAJOR IN NURSING, I HAVE ALOT OF ROOM TO EXPLORE MY OPTIONS.

Why limit yourself to a Nursing degree. You need to check the curriculum and prereq's of the medical schools you plan on attending. Most if not all require 8 credits of chem w/lab, 8 credits of organic chem w/lab, 8 credits of Physics and at least 8 credits of biology with lab.

Nursing just doesn't require that you take most of those classes in as many credits that med school requires. I worked in admissions for a medical school for 2 years. You should really talk to a counselor at your High School to understand the kind of commitment you are undertaking.

If you want to be an MD, GO FOR IT!!!!! I was premed for a couple of years and majoring in Biochemistry really allowed to me to explore the other health professions because alot of the science classes I took were with Nursing, MLT, Dentistry, Speech Pathology, and Sports Med students. Great exposure.

i dont think that i will be limiting myself with a nursing degree. after my bsn i might then choose to go the crna route and i wouldnt be able to do so with a degree in any biological science. but yet i still have the option to go to med school as long as i obtain all of the prereq's. any others thinking about medical school after your bsn?

Nope. I considered med school, but the time involved to become a doctor put me off. Plus I'd have to do a year post-bacc program to get my pre-reqs done, and that's very expensive. Nursing seems more hands-on to me, and a more holistic way of treating patients.

One of the best MDs I know was a nurse first. Paid her way through medical school by working as an RN.

I originally started college as a pre-med/biology major, but dropped the pre-med after about a year when I realized that I was more interested in actually having a social life then studying every Saturday night in college. That and I sucked at O-chem. Right now I'm seriosuly considering CRNA school after I finish my BSN, but I can't say the med school route isn't still a thought in the back of my mind (especially since my fiance is in med school and he says there are LOTS of nurses in his class). I don't know if I have the drive to do four more years of school however, PLUS residency, plus all the stuff I would have to do to even get in (like take Physics II, retake O-chem I and II, and take the MCAT!!). The CRNA route is sounding GREAT to me!

I've thought about it. But the additional classes it would take would take me another 1-2 years. If I had gotten serious about it sooner I guess I could have squeezed them in somewhere. But I think the idea of being a nurse first is a good one.

I am also pondering the MD vs CRNA route. I just got my BSN back in May and right now I am working on the science prereqs and think I may get a bachelor's in Biology, take the MCATs and decide from there. Although, I do have to say the CRNA route is appealing bc right now all I really have to do is apply..... I am already working on close to a year in ICU, have taken the GRE's, have the BSN.... soooooo I dunno....

If I could do it all over again, I would have been just premed and gone straight to med school. Granted I am only 22 and this really is only a few year setback (really isnt a setback either, my short time as an RN has been quite rewarding and I have learned tons...) But, I know deep inside that I want the MD... just don't know STILL if I want to dedicate ALL that time.... it's such a tossup... debate it constantly.

I wish you luck with your decision. Work real hard and get awesome grades... that's my best advice to ya for now... But be sure to have some sorta fun too.... ;)

Same thing here about med school. I was orginally chem major to be pre-med, I ditched that option went into business. Now I"m looking at the field again, impossible. I need a post-bacc program and other classes, which would take 2-3 years before I get in. Plus, I have a serious relationship, would like to get married and start a family. Nursing is a great option to decide, then go from there ...

Hind sight....

I should have when I was in college (20 years ago) I didn't think I was smart enough - my dad (a surgeon) even suggested it back then but oh well... I am thrilled to be in Nursing school now and the hours will be better with my family. There is no way I'd consider it now I would never take the time away from raising my boys...

The CRNA route is no cake walk. Although you don't have to take as much science as a pre-med student most CRNA programs expect you to have taken Organic chem. Just something to think about.
