what is considered a competitive gpa?

Published

Hello everyone! I was wondering what is a competitive gpa to get accepted to your nursing school.

I should say, the gpa for your nursing school applications.

this is what I copy and pasted from my school's (well my future school that I will be transferring to) website:

The minimum GPA requirement is 2.75, which applies to both cumulative and prerequisite GPA. Because the admissions process is highly competitive, the GPA of the admitted class of students tends to be higher than 2.75. The overall average GPA for students admitted into the program is a 3.42 +/- .13. The GPA range of students admitted into the program is between 2.99-4.0.

Hope this helps! :D

At my school you need a 3.75 or better in all pre-reqs to stand a fighting chance. I should say though that we are on a points system so if you get 3.5-3.74 you might have a chance if you have points from work and/or volunteer experience as well.

I have been told for my school that anything over a 3.0 is competitive. It depends on the number of applicants. They took 50 students last year. I believe that anything over a 3.5 has a good chance. But that is coming from me. It is so competitive out there!

The minimum pre-req GPA for the program I'm applying to is 3.0 but I was told that anything below a 3.5 won't get in. They say that anyone with a 3.75+ stands a pretty good chance of getting in but a couple of semesters ago, the cut-off was a 3.8. Admission is based strictly on GPA.

It depends if it is a state university, private university, or community college too. I've noticed that state universities tend to be most competitive, and that a 3.5 GPA is competitive. Private universities around here have "low" requirements. They'll accept anyone with a 3.0 GPA or higher because there isn't much competition. (With those outrageous prices, who could blame them?) Community college seems to be somewhere inbetween... those are just my observations.

Not sure you can call a school that accepts 2.99 as highly competitive...

The school I am applying to looks at the entire application, and is very elusive about what a surefire GPA would be, but they do recommend above a 3.5. Talking to others that got in it seems the bar is closer to 3.7.

I attended a nursing program at a for-profit trade school that did not pay close attention to grade point averages or test scores. As long as you passed the NET test and were willing to pay the expensive tuition, you were admitted on a first-come, first-serve basis. In other words, this particular school absolutely DID NOT have a competitive admission process.
