What's it like in CT?

U.S.A. Connecticut

I was thinking about moving to New Britian,CT and I was just wondering what's it like there. Can a single mom with 2 boys make a decent living there on a LPN salary? Thanks for any replies! :balloons:

Hi gapeach! I grew up in New Britain Ct and to tell you the truth, it's a little run down but not to the degree like places like baltimore or DC is. A lot of working poor people, although there are good areas. I would suggest moving to more suburban areas like Newington or West hartford. Income varies for LpNs here from as low as $19/hr to $30+(at Riverside hcc in East Hartford CT)

Good luck!

Pokey!

Do these suburban areas have nursing homes? I love working with the elderly population. And can a single mom raise 2 boys on a LPN salary up there? If there are any LPN's that live CT please respond. Thanks!

My sister is a single LpN, no kids. She worked about 60-80 hours a week and made $73000 that year. She would have made about $38-43 K if she had not of worked outrageous hours. I believe that you can raise two boys if you live modestly but it will be a struggle. Two bedroom rents start around $600 and are usually $700-750 a month. We have income tax and state tax. The cost of living is much higher than in georgia.

There are a lot of nursing homes that pay pretty well especially if you have experience. I wish you all the best!

I live in New Britain and could honestly say that you can make a decent living here. Some places pay up to $30+ for LPN's. There's alot of nursing homes that are looking for LPN's. You just have to live in a good area of New Britain because some of the areas aren't so good. I'm currently looking for an apartment myself but i haven't found anything yet. Good Luck!

Thank you for your reply! How are the public schools there in the New Britain area? :balloons:

When I grew up, schools were wonderful. now, the high school is overcrowded and the students don't have books! There's talk of building another school soon. The taxes are high too. The private schools are alot better right now. But if you had to put your child in public school perhaps Lincoln Elementary, Roosevelt Middle are okay choices. I'm sorry that I can't be more encouraging. My brother is in the High school right now and I am NOT impressed. It was a totally different story when I went to NBHS.

Oh Gosh! I wonder should I stay in Georgia! How about the Hartford area? Is that a great area to live in? Pokey you are making me having second thoughts here! But seriously thank you for your honest replies! :balloons:

I don't want to discourage you I am just giving you the down side of living in New Britain. Connecticut as a whole is a great place to work and live as a nurse. Towns like Newington, West hartford, Manchester are much better places to raise kids and where you are able to afford things. Hartford is much worse than New Britain.Poverty rates in Hartford and Bridgeport are among the highest in the nation. If you really want to live in Connecticut, do a seach and reasearch the town that you think would suit you. Again, good luck. As a LPN you will make a decent living and will be able to live pretty comfortably.

:balloons: i agree with pokey....ct is a great state to work as an lpn.it is also good in many communities but i live in southeastern ct. and i feel it is a much better place to be than the big cities. also you need to like snow and driving in it and cold weather. but here in our part of the state we get much fewer storms than the northwest hills does. do you have relatives or friends up north here or would you be coming without any support that way? good luck and if you wanna talk or hear more about here just let me know.
