Confused Pre-nursing student

Published

Hi, I'm starting my BScNursing program in fall 2005. I'm just a little confused about the general responsibilites and duties of nurses. If someone could outline some of the tasks they perform on a day to day basis or what a typical day of a nurse is like, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help!

There are too many different types of nursing to have a "typical day" or even a typical nurse. Is there an area of nursing you are interested in? Perhaps someone from that area could better answer your question. My "typical day" in NICU (if there is such a thing) is very different from that of a Med-surg, cardiac unit, or home health nurse. Not to mention office nurses, school nurses, community health nurses...depends on what you want to do.

Specializes in ER, Medicine.

Yes, there are so many areas of nursing and it's a little hard to give a good generalized answer. Your academic advisor would be an excellent resource (in addition to other members that reply). Good luck!

I have to agree it depends on where you work. Generally speaking though the RN is the patients advocate. We carry out activities as outlined by nursing judgment and our scope of practice and the physicians orders. However if we know a physician order to be incorrect we have the responsibility not to carry out that order. Hope this helps

I admit I'm a little curious: How did you decide that you want to be a nurse, without already investigating this??
