Confused about nursing school apps??

Published

Hi, I'm a college freshman soon to be attending CSUEB and I am a bit confused about when I am supposed to apply for nursing school? I recently got my classes chosen by the counselor and I know they are more towards my general ed than my pre-reqs. I was told by a nursing student that we apply the beginning of our sophomore year, but do we have to and if we don't have all our pre-requisites complete do I have to wait to apply my junior year? If so, to add a class for each quarter to make sure I get all of it done.

-Thank-you :)

Will you have all of your prereqs and general ed complete in 2 years, and be eligible to begin the BSN program in exactly 2 years? If so, I would try to get your prereqs done on the earlier side. You can generally have one or two outstanding prereqs when you apply, but no more. Don't take more than one of the big sciences together, and consider summer classes. Unfortunately, counselors are rarely familiar with the ins and outs of oddball programs like nursing.

I agree with RunBabyRN(Congratulations:)), It's not too early to make an appointment with a nursing school advisor. They are the ones to see with nursing school questions and advice on what you should be doing now.

There may be a few university rules the university advisors will know better than the nursing school ones, so you may have two advisors to talk to depending on your questions.

Thank-you, I will schedule the appointment asap :)

I went to CSUEB as well! And I was in the pre-nursing cohort! :) apply for nursing school once all of your pre-reqs are complete. When someone told you that you can apply your sophomore year, they imply that you will have all of your pre-reqs finished by the end of your freshman year (which is very difficult to do, considering that means doubling up on difficult science courses). Apply your sophomore year also means that you are applying for the nursing program to start your junior year. CSUEB's program is actually 2 1/2 years (at least at the concord campus, I don't remember about the Hayward one), and if you apply your sophomore year, you're "on track" to graduate on time. But to be honest, if I had someone to tell me about all this, I wish they told me to take my pre reqs slower and worry about better grades in those science courses to be apply to apply with a higher gpa, even though that means applying my junior year and finishing a year later. Just an opinion from someone who went there and has gone through it. I wish you luck in your studies :)

Awesome! Did you enjoy the program and I figured I would be behind due to my remedial math classes, but now I feel more at ease knowing I can still apply my junior year if I get waitlisted for classes. What are some tips you'd reccomend for getting into the program besides GPA? And do all the courses in the pre-reqs have to be specifically the one listed online or can we take other courses to replace them? And thank-you :)
