Confused new Immigrant RN

Published

I am a new US immigrant here in Virginia. I came from the Philippines and I got the opportunity to migrate here because of my mother's petition (F2B category). I am an NCLEX passer from the Northern Mariana Island (US Territory) since December 2007 and since I am now here in the US, I would like to continue my profession as a Registered Nurse. But I am confused on how to start the process. I don't know if Virginia Board of Nursing accept license from a US territory. Do I need to take an English Test as part of the requirements of CGFNS even if I have my greencard visa, SS Number and my Virginia Driver's License. Last 2008 I've passed the IELTS with a band score of 7.0 but the certificate expired in 2010. I will appreciate any help you can provide regarding my concerns. Thank you.

You need to look on your states board of nursing website. It will say what you need to do to get licensed in that state and the steps you need to follow.

According to the NCSBN (https://www.ncsbn.org/Nursing_Licensure.pdf) your license from Northern Mariana Islands is valid:

"The BONs in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories-Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands-comprise the membership of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN®)."

Now, I'd suggest you do a little research on licensure by endorsement with the Virginia BON: Virginia Board of Nursing Forms and Applications
