Confused high school student

My name is Destany, Im a sophmore. I knew that I wanted to be an RN when my niece was born back in 2004. Something about that changed my life. Right now Im doing good in school besides geometry, Ive got a F in geometry but I am normally an AB student. Ive got 3 weeks of this 9 weeks left so Im going to bring it up as high as I can. Please dont let you think that Im a slacker. Im a wonderful student. In my graduating class there are 388 students and in that line up with grades gpa's and whatever else im number 52. So I am in a nursing program at school, Ive been in it since last year and I love it with all my heart. I look forward to that class everyday. I wish I could stay in that class all day. Ive got a 98A in nursing. When I become a Junior next year my nursing teacher can have me certified as a CNA and I can help out at the local nursing home. Then when Im a senior I can work there and be paid. So here are my plans, please i need everyones opinion. I want to go to a community college here and get my associates degree in nursing then this is my goal. I live in Thomasville GA, my goal is to transfer over and go to and get my MSN. But the only problem is my family doesnt like the idea. I know its a lot of money, like 44,000 a year right now but my heart is set to going and money isnt an issue. Thats the last thing on my mind. All I know is that with all my heart I want to go to Vanderbilt. Nobody understands that. But this is my goal.

If that's what you want, I say go for it! There are alot of opportunities out there for financial aid and scholarships. Just try to keep your debt down to a minimum. Credit card companies are notorious for sending credit cards to new college students. If you keep out of debt early on, it will be easier to obtain school loans when you really need to borrow. Maintain a positive attitude and stay motivated. Your family will eventually see how happy nursing makes you.

Hooray for you!!! Don't let any difficulties that the future may hold for you change your mind.

A little bit of advice about the sequence of your education: The ADN is a wonderful step into nursing (I'm an ADN nurse--about 60% of RNs are also) but it does not get you into graduate school. For that (or for other "advanced practice" specialties) you need a Bachelors degree--and in particular the BSN--from a 4 year college.

So you will have a choice to make when you are a senior in HiSchool: Apply for a University and get your BSN right off the bat, or apply at a CommCollege and get your ADN first. You can roam around this forum and find that lots of ADN nurses are working out ways to "transition" to the BSN level.

(I went to Univ of Tenn for my BA degree--so my sis and I are kinda rivals...which is fun in football season.)

PS: A family story: We lived in Nashville at the time my sis was a senor in HiSchool. She deperately wanted to go to Vandy so when "College Night" for parents came along, of course that was the recruiter that my folks went to see first. They came home that night and sat down with my sis very seriously. "Cathy", my dad says, "we looked into Vanderbilt very carefully and we think its a WONDERFUL school, just like you told us. But you're going to have to study VERY hard because we can only afford to send you there for about 2 weeks."

Dad was always a joker.

Hello, Destany,

You don't let anything stand in your way to being a nurse....

Yes, you can get your ASN/ADN and work for a while and/or go straight to the RN to MSN program. You do not need to get the BSN first. So check with and get an idea about tuition and courses and time involved....things like that.
