An episiotomy is a medical treatment. Why is it done? It is being done by the doctor for something in the normal birthing process that needs to be assisted or has not gone right.

if you are needing help with the different problems of ob and peds or the pathophysiology, i put together some really helpful weblinks for these subject areas that you can go to in order to find this kind of information. you will find them listed on this sticky thread in the nursing student assistance forum:
you can often find pathophysiology for most medical diseases and conditions in the online merck manual. become familiar with the brookside press site for ob (http://www.brooksidepress.org/products/military_obgyn/home.htm) since it has videos, information on drugs and ob problems. good luck with your class.
pathophysiology of what can go wrong in ob tells you how ob problems evolve. that information is needed to understand the etiology of nursing problems. nursing interventions, however, are performed upon the order of the physician (collaborative) as well as to affect the outcome of the nursing problems (independent). these can, and are, subject to debate which is why instructors often ask for students to provide rationales or references for the interventions they choose to use.
