Commuting for awesome job

Hello,

I just wanted some opinions if possible. I currently live in the Indy area and work for a large cv critical care unit. I am currently in ACNP program and want to try my hand at trauma-icu but the surrounding trauma hospitals as well as the trauma icu in my hospital are not hiring. So I broadened my search to a national leading teaching hospital trauma icu and was interviewed. The place is all I could hope for as far as getting trauma experience. So my question finally is does it seem worth it to drive an hour and a half for a great career opportunity? Thanks!

    Many years ago, I drove 2 hours each way to work in the subspecialty I really wanted. I got a modified Baylor, weekends-only position and rented a room locally so I only made the round trip once, and didn't drive back and forth multiple times in a week. I started out getting a cheap motel room, but, as I got to know people at the hospital, one of the nurses knew someone who was interested in making some extra money by renting out a room (but didn't want to just advertise to the general public, since she was an older woman living alone). The situation not only worked out well, but we ended up becoming close friends.

    In my situation, it was totally do-able and totally worth it.

    My sister did something like that for a travelling position. She and her landlady became good friends and corresponded for quite a while after my sister moved on. So some options are out there.

    Awesome jobs are hard to come by. It would be worth it to try - like others have said, rent a room, a cabin at a state park, bunk with friends or just enjoy the drive but at least try. You never know where this opportunity may lead.
