Community vs psych nursing before LD

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi there,

I am a new grad and am interested in getting into labour and delivery nursing. Because I had no clinical experience in this area, I am doing a labour and delivery certificate at a nearby college and decided to look for a part time nursing job in the meantime to get my career started.

I just received two job offers from different places and I'm having a very difficult time in choosing one.

One is a home care company and the other is an eating disorders unit at a nearby hospital .

In the future I plan on finishing my certificate, working in LD and then getting my Nurse Practitioner in either neonatal area or womens health.

Which part time job do you think would be more beneficial to my future?

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

Are you in Canada? Just guessing due to the spelling of "labour". If so, my south-of-the-border input probably won't be very relevant to you.

Yes I am in Canada,

I guess my biggest question is which experience do you think future LD employers may be more open to?

Specializes in Emergency Nursing.

Does your home care company have any clients that are post-partum, neonates or pediatric patients with chronic illness? I ask because you could try to get assigned to those types of patients. My other question is that for the eating disorder unit at the nearby hospital, are there a labor and delivery or postpartum unit in the same hospital? If that is the case, you might want to take the eating disorder position because it gives you future opportunities within the same facility.
