Community college transfer to CSU for nursing

Published

hey everyone, I hope you all can help me answer this question. Maybe someone is having the same problem as I do can help. I went to talk to my counselor the other day and they told me something very confusing. I'm currently taking prereq course at a community college and hope to transfer to CSUB or CSU LA or CSU LB for the BSN nursing program next year. But the counselor told me that all CSU nursing program (except the CSU CHannel Islands and LA) will only accept incoming freshmen into their BS nursing program, not transfering students from community college. IS this correct? If it is, then that really sucks, because I will only have two CSU that i can apply for and everything else will not work. SHe also told me that CSU Channel Islands will soon be accepting only incoming freshmen into their program and not transfering students aymore.

Please if anyone knows the answer, then please tell me, otherwise i would have to call the CSU and talk to the conselor there.

thanks a lot

I think your counselor is misinformed...I highly doubt that every CSU let alone any CSU is going to do that. CC counselors are hit or misss...usually they miss and when they do, they are totally off.

I don't think there is a single school in the CSU system that admits freshman as nursing majors without a supplemental application once prerequisites are done or nearly done. Those supplemental apps are avail to students currently at the school as well as transfers from community colleges and other colleges such as private schools and CSU's. You will have to apply for CSU general admission then the supplemental app. Just be warned all the nursing schools have slightly different admission requirements. Some require psychology and others don't, some require nutritions others don't, some take foreign language proficiency into consideration, economic disadvantage, coming from a rural area, or the local area. Some require essays most don't. Most have some entrance exam such as the TEAS. I wish there was a state wide standard for the CSU system with a standard application and a standard time of notification. It is crazy how it is now.

I'm a community college student that's accepted into 2 CSU BSN program & neither of those schools are Channel Island nor LA. Perhaps what the counselor is trying to say is ... schools that have multiple application periods per year, sometimes they will allocate certain application period for current students only. For example at CSULB, there are two application periods per year (spring & fall) and spring application period is for current CSULB pre-nursing students only.

From what I've heard last year was the first year CSU schools took current students only for the spring co-horts but that had to do with the poor California economy not anything having to do with nursing. None of the CSU took spring semester transfers last year no matter what your major. But this gave an advantage to currently attending nursing applicants because they only had to compete with each other not transfers

thanks everyone for replying. What the counselor told me was confusing but yes, it makes sense to me that they should allor transfer student into nursing program beucase on the application, it did ask for the courses and where did (campus) you took it at.

hey Nursingstudent 0611, you mind if I asked you which CSU did you get accepted for the BSN program and when did you apply. Also, what was your GPA and TEAS score. ITs alrite if u dont want to answer. So wat you are saying is that you have taken all the prerreq at a community college and then apply to two CSU and got accepted. Then that means i can do that too. THe transfering couselor was just so confusing.

munkeyann - Yes, I took all my pre req classes & completed the entire IGETC, all at a community college. You just have to make sure that all classes are transferable before taking them. For example. I've heard a particular chemistry class from Santa Monica is not transferable to CSULB. I applied at east bay, San Jose, Long Beach, and San Bernardino for fall entry. I got into east bay & Long Beach and waiting to hear from the rest. I don't want to give out my stats on a public website, but to give you an idea, here is the school compiled stats from CSULB. Their rating is based on a 10 point scale (max of 4 points for science GPA, 2 for GE GPA, 2 for TEAS overall, 2 for TEAS math).

Fall 2010 initial stats 434 Generic applicants (90 admitted, 115 ineligible, 229 qualified alternates)

Rating Average# - 9.27 (range 8.94 - 9.88) Statistics for 90 selected students:

Average Science GPA - 3.85 (range 3.54 - 4.0)

Average GE GPA - 3.72 (range 3.0 - 4.0)

Average TEAS test score - 89.49% (range 85.9% - 94.7%)

Average Math score - 91.89% (range 71.1% - 100%)

thanks for the info nursingstuden0611. Your response help alot. I will definitely try to apply to atleast 3 CSU and hopefully get accepted by two of them. I guess I misunderstood the counselor. lol. thanks again

The source of the confusion may be an admissions freeze that was in place for the Spring 2010 semester. For that semester only, entry into most CSU nursing programs was limited to students already enrolled at a CSU campus.

As far as I know, the freeze has been lifted for Fall 2010, and transfer students from community colleges are once again being accepted.

I expect that competition will be intense for the nursing slots at most CSU campuses. For reference purposes, here are the Fall 2009 admission stats for the BSN program at CSU Sacramento:

387 applicants (60 enrolled, 16 declined, 107 ineligible, 204 qualified alternates)

Statistics for 60 enrolled students:

Average GPA - 3.857 (range 3.569 - 4.0)

Average TEAS test score - 91.9% (range 87.1% - 95.9%)

Average points earned for Optional Criteria - 9.7*

Good luck!
