Community College or Private Schools?

If you want a Bachelors degree, go to a university, but if you want to see how you like nursing before you commit to paying a ton of $$ then do community college. Just because a school is private does not mean it offers a higher quality education or clinical oppotunities. I enjoyed the affordability of a ADN program. If I had known more, I might have gone for the 4 year, but for a person with a child and husband,2 years was enough (for them to take),

I dont know if I should take LVN first or RN right away...

ADN=Associate degree in Nursing

It seems like in San Diego, at least, there is a long waiting list for both ADN and BSN programs @ public colleges. So some nrsg students are going to Maric College so they can get their education and start working.

Whatever you decide, you need those pre-reqs done, AND you need to MAKE SURE the school is accredited w/NLN--you can check w/the BRN to be sure the school is accredited, I think.

You're smart to get going on those pre-reqs. Good Luck.

I went to a private 4 year school in San Diego (graduated 1997)and have never regretted the time spent there or the student loans I had to take out. I ended up with about 25, 000 in student loans, but it was important to me to have the Bachelors degree regardless of what major I went into. Plus I got a lot of personal attention and had a great externship experience my senior year in the ER at Childrens Hospital.

Most of the nurses I know took their education one step at a time and worked part time jobs. There is nothing wrong with that and it makes sense for people with children or families. If you are single and you know you want to be an RN, go for the 4 year degree. FYI I live in LA county too and RNs are making over 50,000 a year to start out at many hospitals. The loans are not as big of a deal as the time commitment. Hope this helps and I wish you the best in your career whatever path you choose to get there.
