Hi!!
Im a british nurse who is emigrating to Oz very soon:)
Im interested to fing out how UK nurses and the skills they have are percieved by Australian nurses. Ive worked in stroke rehab for a few years so my skills arn't "dynamic" but I love what I do.
Am so excited...any usefull tips and things are very welcome!

MY 2c worth. British nurses that I have worked with for the past 24 years have been great. Good organisation skills, don't get rattled and are great to EN'S.
They don't even whinge. The ozzies around them do that for them. Ha Ha.
No, they tend to be knowledgeable? and most important, caring.
A good colleague to have around.
Fair dinkum, so keep up the good work,

Thank you for your replies. I'm all registered with the Victorian nursing board etc.
I think what I was really worried about was that british nurses may not be seen as "technical" as ozzie nurses - will I need to do courses when I get there on cannulation, venepuncture etc? In my area of work these skills wern't required so it was impossible to get the funding to be allowed to do the training!!
Anyway I'm off to stock up on sunblock and umbrellas seeing as we are going to Melbourne!!
Gidday again, Rest assured, Venapuncture and cannulation, is not part of our training either.
It seems to be something the health agency teaches depending on the need of the staff in certain areas, or part of ongoing courses that are run by the health agency (hospital).
I am a fairly new graduate and will be able to do a cannulation course if I go to work in the ED department. My venepuncture skills still need work so I have a go and if not successful call the resident Doctor. There are other nurses here that are experieced Grade 2 year 4 that don't do venepuncture if there is a Doctor around and have not done a cannulation course. So don't worry. You usually have enough to do as most hospitals expect Registered Nurses to do Total patient care, showers, dressings, meds, all for you allocated patients. Let the pathology people do it on their rounds.
P.S. I am in Melbourne also. C
