Hi everyone!
First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who has been accepted into the next starting cohort for this program!
I am starting this super early because I have already begun to freak out lol.
Is anyone applying for the MDE MDE/DNP or MDE/PHD program for 2017?
This is my dream program !!
I am prepping for the GRE at this point which I am taking in August. It has been a long arduous road for me to say the least and I am ready to send my app off with a prayer. Any advice from current/previous students of this program or applicants welcome! And to my fellow applicants what other programs are you applying to? And most importantly good luck to everyone. The application opens August of 2016

Congrats to those who were accepted! I still can't believe the letter that came yesterday. I made an account because I'd love to connect with others—especially those accepted to the DNP midwifery specialty. I'm an NYC resident and would love to meet others already here as well. Is anyone else older with a family? I'm nervous about balancing it all!
Looking forward to meeting some of you in person in March!
I was accepted! Coming from California, hoping to find nearby off-campus housing. Not sure where to start with the house-hunt process. One or two-bedroom apartments maybe.. Something decently affordable if that exists, hah. I would appreciate any advice!
The only way to get decently affordable in NYC is to live with two or more roommates. It's soooooo pricey, and the apartments are oftentimes soooooo crappy. Streeteasy is a good site/app for looking at listings. I have not used it to contact brokers -- only to get a feel for prices. Northern Manhattan is going to be the most affordable area close to campus. There are also affordable areas deep into Queens and Brooklyn, but the commute is killer. I would recommend looking in:
Washington Heights
Inwood
Hamilton Heights
and Highbridge and Kingsbridge in the Bronx
In Washington Heights a general rule of thumb is that west of Broadway is safer and pricier. East of Broadway is dicier but cheaper.
NYC real estate moves fast, so you really can't look in earnest until 4-6 weeks before you want to move in. A good broker can give you the lay of the land, and can also help you get all your ducks in a row financially before you start looking. I know a great one -- pm me here, or find me through the FB group.
You can also look at a couple of Facebook groups to see what's out there:
Gypsy Housing
NYC Actor Sublet Connection
I think they're open groups, so you can look freely.
For me, one of the most important aspects of living in NYC is having a home that feels comfortable, safe and welcoming. It's a tough city, but it's a little easier when you have a good living situation.

I'm older too -- but no family. You can do it! The hardest part is the first 15 months, and then it's less crazy.
I live in NYC too -- Washington Heights. I'm still pinching myself a little bit. I had to double check this morning to make sure I hadn't dreamed it.
Just got accepted to the MDE Program. Congrats to all who got accepted and I wish the best to those who didn't.
I'm worrying about the commute since I live in Jamaica, Queens. It's 1hr 30min is it that bad? I also work part time Fri afternoon Saturday afternoon and Sunday all day. Will working part time make it very difficult? I also have a wife and 1 year old baby so I want to balance family time and school.
Got accepted to MDE! Congrats to everyone. Who is already in NYC? I'm in Bushwick and beyond delighted by the oppressive commute I have in store for me.
Ha! That's a doozy.I'll be commuting from the UES, so still a hike since there's not a direct path. Though I think the Q is helping SUBSTANTIALLY since I actually have a bit of a link to the west side train lines now. phew. I think it will be about an hour.
My ultimate goal is to wiggle my way on to the NYP shuttle bus, though, since I live next to Cornell NYP. I have heard it could be a possibility but I also fear getting kicked off if VIP doctors show up and there aren't enough seats. ANYWAY, it's an adventure to be explored.
If all else fails...maybe I will keep my marathon spot and my training shall be running to Columbia from Cornell :)
Bushwick....does that mean the L shutdown will ruin your life?? (i dont understand brooklyn geography yet)

The M4 may be your friend too. It goes all along the east side, and then up to northern Manhattan. Not quick, but sometimes it's nice to stay above ground.
Truth, hadn't considered buses. I suppose it depends what time I have to do it - if it's early enough where most humans will still be sleeping, perhaps that makes sense!
I'm figuring the commute time will be either a good buffer (I like audiobooks so i can kind of relax on a commute - mine is currently almost this long) OR yes, more review time. Either way, it is a good reason to stay on campus all day. I'm hoping to treat it like a full work day everyday so that when i get home i've *mostly* finished for the day. Not that it helps, my husband is in med school so we'll just be zombie-staring at each other and trying to mentally review while making small talk. so romantic, our future :)
I, too, needed a pinch upon waking this morning. I also realized that I completely dropped the ball on my FAFSA/Financial Aid stuff and got that done before I even made my coffee this morning (**extinguishes fire under @$$).
Anyone else in the same boat or have any associated information about Financial Aid?
Also, is there a hopefuls Facebook page for Columbia MDEers?
Thanks and Happy Friday, y'all.

Hi Larakg I'm so glad to see another marathon runner on here! I ran the marathon last year, and had to take a microbiology midterm the very next day. That wasn't fun. But at least you'll get Marathon Monday off - it looks like we won't have class on 11/7 :) 2
