Hi everyone!
First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who has been accepted into the next starting cohort for this program!
I am starting this super early because I have already begun to freak out lol.
Is anyone applying for the MDE MDE/DNP or MDE/PHD program for 2017?
This is my dream program !!
I am prepping for the GRE at this point which I am taking in August. It has been a long arduous road for me to say the least and I am ready to send my app off with a prayer. Any advice from current/previous students of this program or applicants welcome! And to my fellow applicants what other programs are you applying to? And most importantly good luck to everyone. The application opens August of 2016

@Larakg Hey! I know you're busy so I'm glad you responded at all. I can't figure out how to send messages directly. There was only a friend request button and I have no idea what that does. I'm gonna just put my email here and then delete it in a few days. [email protected]
Have you considered Yale by any chance since they have no prereqs for admission? or was that someone else saying that Columbia had less prereqs than others?
@UCSBalum Just sent it to you!
I haven't considered Yale - for a few reasons, mainly that I don't want to live apart from hubs. and new haven is a bummer of a town (I'm judgy, but for sure it ain't what it looks like on gilmore girls). Basically I'm limited to NYC for the moment and haven't really explored much outside. I moved from Boston and had been thinking about going to school there (plus I have a friend finishing up her NP at MGH), so if we end up there for hub's residency, who knows.
This is me procrastinating my psychology reading.
@Larakg I already went through the powerpoint slides HA! Great information. The schedule will definitely be tough. Did they mention more about being able to study abroad during the MDE spring rotations? That seems awesome. I would love to do that.
LOL it's not gilmore girls. I totally understand. If you have a family/husband you have more to consider. Boston has a lot of good programs, but they're very differently structured. Northeastern has similar prereqs to Columbia if you're considering boston. There's no structure like Columbia's that I'm aware of those. Umass worcester's GEP is straight to DNP or MSN without a bachelors. There's too much to consider. I'm with you on the procrastination though.
The abroad opportunities seem cool. There were some language restrictions - for example, i remember the DR location requires fluent Spanish. I think it really depends on the kind of experience you want, since things you are exposed to abroad may not be relevant in a us hospital. But still cool.
I'm actually interested in the Cooperstown NY option - not sexy, but apparently they let you do a bit more as a student than the hospitals in the city. Or at least that's what the director implied...
@Larakg Yeah that makes sense. I'm doing FNP so hospital/acute care experience is only so relevant for me, but if you're not wanting to go onto the DNP the Cooperstown NY sounds great. If they have better integration and experiences for students, it's your win. I hadn't even noticed that on the list. They really have something for everyone. I really like that.
For those applying to Columbia MDE/DNP, what kind of experiences are you putting in ur CV, how much leadership experience do you have? am really looking into this program and I want to maximize my chances. I am not really good at standardized testing, so I want to strengthen other parts of my application. If you guys have any information or opportunities I could look into it would be great. I am currently a junior finishing my undergrad in community health. I am planning on applying for the 2018 SUMMER start. Thanks!!
@aspirnj
I am in CA. I don't know of any opportunities you could benefit from out there. Maybe check with a few hospitals for volunteer work or shadowing someone might be good ! I put all my experience on my CV. My leadership positions her mostly been with the volunteer work I do.
Good luck
Larakg

Sorry I'm slow to respond! I can't seem to get all nurses to email me with new posts. Oh well.
I did have some questions about the session: 1) Did they give out an acceptance rate?
I don't remember them giving a rate, but I know the class size is around 200.
2) What did they say about your chances of getting into both the MDE and DNP program. How does that process work?
It varies by program and I suspect your background. For example, midwifery seems like a really intense process. That's one I would suggest asking the admissions committee about, because I'm not thinking about a dnp yet and probably didn't listen well. I do know that it's two separate committees that review the apps, one for me and one for dnp, so applying to both and not getting enough doesn't mean you're totally out.
3)Did they mention cost/ scholarship sources? 4) Did they mention the weekly/month schedule and what that looks like? Days of clinical vs. days/hours of class?
Yes, they provided a lot of detail. I have the PowerPoint slides and could share somehow maybe. I know right off the bat we start two days a week clinical in that first summer.
5) Is it possible to work during the DNP portion part time as an RN? Thanks!
It's very possible, you're only studying maybe two days a week? I think the setup purposely pushes you to get experience. Obviously cannot work the third year in your residency.
That's some quick info, will try to provide more later when I'm not on my phone away from the house... if you can pm your email I'd be happy to send the PowerPoint.
And sorry for typos and nonsense...
