Columbia University MDE 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone!

First of all, I would like to congratulate everyone who has been accepted into the next starting cohort for this program! :D

I am starting this super early because I have already begun to freak out lol.

Is anyone applying for the MDE MDE/DNP or MDE/PHD program for 2017?

This is my dream program !!

I am prepping for the GRE at this point which I am taking in August. It has been a long arduous road for me to say the least and I am ready to send my app off with a prayer. Any advice from current/previous students of this program or applicants welcome! And to my fellow applicants what other programs are you applying to? And most importantly good luck to everyone. The application opens August of 2016 :D

Hey ! @cjones89 fellow poly sci-er turn healthcare -er haha

Phlebotomy is awesome ! My best friend's mother just completed a phlebotomy course. She loves the flexibility with her schedule at the lab draw station she works at. Columbia is my dream school as well ! This is truly a unique program. The GRE has us all shaking in our boots lol. You will figure out the best way to approach it in due time. Best of luck to you as well!

Is there only one start date a year for this program? Anyone know ?

Hello, I'm a recent grad from California (UC Santa Barbara). I studied biopsychology (brain sciences) and I'm applying this year -2017-2018 yr. Taking the GRE next week and finish my last prereq Aug 4th. It's been a long road as well. I'm applying to Yale, Upenn, BC, Umass worcester, U of Rochester, and maybe one other. Super nervous about the process, but my boyfriend knows one guy who got in and just started last week so I'm going to drill him with questions once he settles in. I'm too far away for info sessions, but would love to hear from anyone who has attended one. My bf is in medical school and I'm much more excited about the application process than I am about starting. Health professions are tough! Also, I'm excited to see other WOC on this page. Hoping for/looking forward to getting into a program with a diverse cohort!

Is there only one start date a year for this program? Anyone know ?

Yes, there is only one -- at the beginning of June.

@UCSBalum Thats so funny. There was a guy in a class I was taking at a CC that got into UCLA MECN and Columbia. I think he opted for Columbia but I didn't get a chance to ask him any question because literally everyone was all over him bombarding him with questions all the time. I could tell he was uncomfortable. Thats why I'm here blowing people up with questions via the internet LOL

I really wanted to attend the University of Rochester program but I cannot afford a second bachelors portion of the program. :coollook:

My husband is in med school too, though I would SO much rather be starting instead of applying :) maybe because working full time while studying, etc is painful... though I suppose clinicals + classes will essentially be the same sort of pain.

I have my notes from the info session if you have any specific questions. I also think admissions is pretty open to questions.

I should also mention that if anyone is planning on going to an info session, be aware it may run long. They seem to be scheduled from 10-noon and my session ran very long. I had to walk out at 12:30 to get to a work obligation and they hadn't even made it through all of the slides. Wish I had taken more time off in advance so I could have a chance to ask questions!

@futureprovider HA! I would be equally uncomfortable being bombarded by questions. Best of luck to him though. I wish these programs published their acceptance rate as readily as MD programs, but maybe that's for the best since we're all still so hopeful. I know Columbia's class is HUGE. 200-300 students whereas Boston College and Umass worcester accept really small classes. I'm still applying to U of Rochester, but the cost is a deterrence and I don't really want/need a second bachelors. I really like the structure of MSN-> DNP or Just RN--> DNP. Doing another BS feels a bit tedious? Maybe that's just me.

@Larakg It's tough being in a relationship with someone in Medical school! My bf and I are long distance though. Boston to California so I sure that adds more stress than necessary. Working full time is intense, but I don't think anything will compare to what we are about to experience from what I've heard. Even other graduate programs are not to the same level of intensity. MPH programs are a piece of cake in comparison is what I've been told more than once.

I did have some questions about the session: 1) Did they give out an acceptance rate? 2) What did they say about your chances of getting into both the MDE and DNP program. How does that process work? 3)Did they mention cost/ scholarship sources? 4) Did they mention the weekly/month schedule and what that looks like? Days of clinical vs. days/hours of class? 5) Is it possible to work during the DNP portion part time as an RN? Thanks!!

Hi! I am also applying to Columbia's program this year! I noticed that this was a direct entry program though. What are advantages and disadvantages of not being able to gain a BSN? I feel that it would be harder for me to find a job as an RN throughout the program (for experience)? Thanks!!

@jmroh There's only a disadvantage for jobs if you have an RN license without a degree. This program offers a MSN, which functionally surpasses the BSN. There should be no disadvantages.
