So where are the potential 2008 Columbia ETPers at? I think a handful of regulars around here have Columbia on their list of apps, so heres a thread to get us through until notifications in Spring 2008. If you'd like, reply here and let us know which specialty you are trying for! I just submitted my app online for Acute Care...Good luck everyone! ;)

Hi, I am new to this forum. I am a young gal from cali who didn't get a room at the dorm. I was waitlisted in the 30s for housing so there isn't much hope on my end. I hope not to be too lonely in an apartment. Does anyone know what classes we'll be taking and what textbooks we'll be using in the summer? Info is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Hope to meet you guys soon.

Hello Fellow Columbians!! ,

Congrats to everyone who has gotten in and good luck to anyone who has yet to hear!!

I just wanted to let you all know that I have the books for the first year of ETP available....they are practically new, many still in their plastic covers, and I am offering them at a more convenient price. You usually get your books during orientation, some you get when you pay for them at the school and others you have to search for at the bookstore which isn't very close (not good when you have to carry all these big books!!). And sometimes you even have to wait for them if not enough have been ordered.

But I have them all! I live very close to the school, so if you want to wait and pick them up until the start of the semester, no problem! If you want to get ahead on things and have them shipped, let me know.

Again Congrats and good luck!!

If you have any questions about anything, just ask :-)

Hi everybody! I'm new too and I'm also from California. I didn't get housing either and I've started looking for a place. There are great places on craigslist but there are 4br and 5brs available. The rent is actually really good. Any interest in housemate or are you just trying to find something for one person? I look forward to hearing from everyone!

Hi everyone! I'm also from Cali and did not get housing. I'm thinking of visiting NY some time in may before school starts to look for a place, but Im also very interested in the housemate/roommate deal....

Choko321, I would like to exchange info or find out what you think about housing mates. What part of California are you from? I'm in Santa Barbara currently but I'm originally from Belmont in the Bay Area. I think a visit to NY might be necessary but I want to look for a place online so I've began at Craigslist and the Columbia subletting webpage. I've tried emailing Adele with the off-campus housing but I'm still waiting to hear her response. I'd like to connect with the other fifty or so who didn't get the dorms. But I think it's cool with have the California thing in common because it's obviously more challenging to find a place with out the chance to see most. Sorry for the long paragraph.:typing

Yogagrace2901,

I'm grew up in LA and am still around in the vicinity to this day. I'm definitely interested in house mates! I'm also waiting to hear back from the off-campus housing as well...

hello,

I'm posting this in hopes that someone more informed than myself will know some answers to my many, many questions... (as no one that I have spoken to so far at the school seems to)

I am starting the women's health certificate program in the fall, but have received NOTHING since my getting my acceptance letter over 2 months ago. At that time I sent in a deposit, which was cashed, but have no contact since then.

2 weeks ago, I called in, asking when I might hear something else, and was told I should have received a "packet" a while ago, and have since missed the deadline for housing (and who knows what else). They said they would send one asap, but haven't...

I called in again, today and was told that I am not an ETP student (what is that?) and that's why I did not get a packet. Also, that I would have "everything" figured out during orientation... which he could not tell me when that would be, only that I needed to be there in person (I think he just didn't know??). I live in Texas right now, so I will need to buy a plane ticket to make it to orientation if it is before July.

Why haven't I heard anything? Why does no one seem to know anything??

Any info would be desperately appreciated!

Many thanks.

Wow, that seems very confusing and complicated. I would hate to be in your shoes.

Everyone on this thread has a bachelor in a specific field (bio, English, geography, etc etc) and has completed some classes required for the ETP (entrance to practice) program- microbio, statistics, etc. {ETP program is designed for individuals who have a bachelor other than in nursing and who want to enter the nursing field. Some schools call this program "direct entry" - 3 year program: 1 year BSN and 2 years MSN}

ETP is the first year of the program at Columbia University after which we receive our bachelor of science in nursing, and can become RNs upon successful examination of the Nclex exam. After this year, students have another year and a half or two years (depending on each specialty) to finish MSN portion of the program (masters of science in nursing). We all have different specialties ..

We all received the acceptance/rejection letters in February and some of us went to the visiting day on March 7th. (on page 35 I typed a small summary on what happened that day)

The ETP program starts May 28 (orientation for 3 days while actual classes start Monday June 2nd) and end August 1st. [[we have 18 units in 2 months!!!]] Fall semester starts right after Labor day (September 2nd). How come you start in the Fall? All the ETP students start in the summer. Are you sure you applied for the right program? Maybe you are already an RN and you're only doing the masters program which in that case is different than us here.

I would definitely call the school again and clarify with them the situation. Maybe they have the wrong address in file for you..etc. Besides the housing application we also received the financial aid, uniforms and instrument, immunization + medical history packages. Everything has a deadline and some have late fees :(

Read the Columbia University SON's (school of nursing) website carefully and call Judy for clarifications. Good luck

The ETP program begins May 28th so there are several upcoming deadlines and ones that have passed-like housing. Since yours starts in fall, I assume the urgency to send info, etc. is not here yet. Although, I can tell you have frustration with the lack of knowledge being shared in general and I can understand that. I believe other ETP students and I are waiting to receive an accepted students account which supposedly provides info on the specifics of the program. Did you talk to your program director specifically? I assume you've explored Columbia's website in detail. I think a lot of info will come once we are able to access a special location of information. There seems to be non-stop action at the school so I know people are working their butts off for their new students. :uhoh3:

You said you are in the Women's Health Certificate Program, which means that I am assuming you already have your MSN, since the certificate programs are for individuals that already have their MSN in another specialty but want to move on. This wouldn't make you an ETP student, and I doubt you'll receive any housing/uniforms/equipment information until later in the summer...us ETP students starting at the end of May didn't receive any of that stuff until less than a month ago! They don't give you much time!! Good luck though

Thanks, both of you, for the info!

I have finally figured out what ETP stands for... (entry to practice), and since I already have a MSN and will be in the certificate program, I have at last realized that I am not an ETP student.

I am assuming my program is very small, because several times I have been given info as if I was an ETP student, which is probably where some of my confusion has come from. (but I have to say, I have been very, very clear when I introduce myself, so honestly, I don't see why they would assume everyone was ETP?)

I finally talked with someone who told me my orientation was right before school starts in the autumn. I just don't see why they couldn't send out a letter saying so much. For those of us type A's, who like to plan every little detail ASAP, these things are stressful.

Anyway, I guess I am posting on the wrong site, b/c this appears to be for ETP's only. But good luck with everything! And thanks for answering my questions. If you have any about nursing, I'd be happy to return the favor.

Hi guys,

What private loans do you recommend. Any banks and private lenders with a good APR? Thanks.
