So where are the potential 2008 Columbia ETPers at? I think a handful of regulars around here have Columbia on their list of apps, so heres a thread to get us through until notifications in Spring 2008. If you'd like, reply here and let us know which specialty you are trying for! I just submitted my app online for Acute Care...Good luck everyone! ;)

I just got my award letter recently, people seem to be getting them at random...I think its safe not to worry.

Just be careful to check the dates on it - mine arrived the day before it was due and I had to fax it. Then they sent me the wrong housing application and I almost didn't get housing.

hi l_eisha,

The fall is when you start your rotations (five weeks each with two clinical days). You still have two classes in addition to the five by five classes, but the schedules seem a little more manageable.

Here's a brief rundown:

Summer: M-T 8 to 4, Fri: 8-12

Fall: M 9-4, Tues 12-2 or 3, depending on class, W,T-clinical, Fri:12-3

Spring: integration.

Best of luck!

Hi,

Thank you so much for the great info., I had a few questions that I was hoping you may be able to answer. I was wondering exactly what you mean by "five by five" classes. Are there six (5 wk.) rotations, three in the fall and three in the spring before integration or am I missing something? I know that you said that either wed. or thurs in the summer is the clinical or assessment lab, but I wanted to know what the non-clinical day looks like...is it another 8-4? Also, do you mean that you are taking two classes during each 5 week period or are there two all fall and two all spring...I was a bit confused because it didn't seem to work out given the class list either way. Last, but not least, I was wondering what classes other than pharm. and the assessment class/lab are covered in the summer. Thank you so so much for all of your help...it definitely helps to put my fears to rest, I really appreciate the inside info!

"I was wondering exactly what you mean by "five by five" classes. Are there six (5 wk.) rotations, three in the fall and three in the spring before integration or am I missing something?"

there are 5 different rotations, each 5 weeks long. you'll have 3 of them in the fall, and you'll have 2 of them in the spring. the last portion of the spring semester is integration.

"I know that you said that either wed. or thurs in the summer is the clinical or assessment lab, but I wanted to know what the non-clinical day looks like...is it another 8-4?"

if you're assigned to clinical on wednesday, then assessment lab will be on thursday. i believe lab was 8-4...but i actually don't remember the exact time (not sure if i'm answering your question clearly...feel free to ask follow ups if i'm not!).

"Also, do you mean that you are taking two classes during each 5 week period or are there two all fall and two all spring...I was a bit confused because it didn't seem to work out given the class list either way."

in the fall, you have 3 five by fives, as well as two semester-long classes. in the spring, you'll have your 2 five by fives, and as well as one five week long class on top of each of these. during integration, the only class you'll have is a seminar.

"Last, but not least, I was wondering what classes other than pharm. and the assessment class/lab are covered in the summer."

you'll have a class called "science of nursing practice" which covers some fundamentals of nursing, a community nursing class, and advanced physiology on top of pharm and physical assessment.

hope this helps! :)

Hey All,

Does anyone know how housing applications work? Did I already miss the boat?

Any current students know anything about living in Columbia housing with a partner/ spouse? My boyfriend is waiting to hear from the law school and it would be great to live on campus together if he's accepted. . .

Kevkev, I wouldn't write off Columbia yet until you get your email about financial aid. I got the "scholarship" and so did lots of others on here, so obviously the person that you talked to was confused. There are scholarships.

look forward to meeting lots of you soon!

I emailed Judy on Monday and asked her how the housing stuff works. She emailed me back today and said housing applications will be mailed out this week. Hopefully the applications will come with info on what housing options are available, where they are, cost, how they determine priority, etc... I am starting to get a little panicky on the housing stuff now since I live in CA and there is no way my husband and I can fly out there for visiting day AND to look for an apartment closer to when school starts. Since we've already booked airfare and hotel for the visiting day I guess we're sort of banking on student housing... Or finding a place on the internet without seeing it, which is REALLY scary!

Hey guys! I'm on the waitlist! I'm pretty happy about that :D

Anyone else have this experience now or in previous years???

Stef,

Congrats on the waitlist, remain optimistic all the way! (BTW, I got into JHU after all, so everything does work out!)

Congrats, Asherah! That's fantastic news!

hi everyone,

speaking of housing. I guess i'll put the word out there that i will be looking for a roomate for when school starts. I figured that in many ways it would be better to have a roomate with a common schedule and overall goal :nurse:

at any rate I live in a very nice and quiet neighborhood with backyards and easy access to the train. it's a straight shot on the 7 into the center of manhattan. However, it's like about an hour away from columbia door to door on the subway. Driving it's probably half an hour with mild traffic (but good luck parking up there).

the room is big, the house is nice, and I can't overstate how cute the neighborhood is. safety is also very important to me and i can tell you that i have never once felt truly unsafe walking home from the train. They actually train beat cops in our neighborhood so you sometimes see them walking in pairs late at night.

thought i'd put my feelers out there for anyone who may be interested. I'm definitely going to need a roommate to bring down the rent here while i'm on this fixed income with the financial aid package they sent me today.

:specs:Side note: for anyone who hasn't gotten theirs yet, I emailed him today and just asked, very nicely, if there was anything else i needed to do in order to receive the package and got it like 20 minutes later :specs:

I will be at the March 7th event at the school. If those of you who are from out of town are interested in seeing the place, send me a message.

Thanks Kensington...it was quite a long road, and its definitely hard to wrap my head around. I'm sure you'll end up exactly where you want to be, and you'll definitely have plenty of choices between programs! ;)

biladiabla,

i don't live on campus now, so I'm not the best to answer your question, but you'll get a packet soon (very soon if i remember correctly) about housing. as a 'domociled couple,' you can get into the housing they offer at the medical campus (which i remember being nice as college housing goes). great views of the hudson and the GW bridge.

however, if your boyfriend is applying to the law school, their classes are at the Morningside Heights campus, i.e. the main campus on 116th st. CUMC is at 168th st.

i'd also point out that Columbia is progressive in it's housing policies and offers domestic partners equal access to housing.

the one thing i remember is that they base your housing needs on distance and how soon you return the form. so if you want campus housing, fill it out and return it pronto.

my two cents of advice.

Ok,

I have a kinda silly question- please don't make fun of me! I'm just wondering when is it "OK" for me to get a Columbia hoodie? Do I have to wait til I'm actually attending classes to wear it without being a total poseur? Or does my $500 deposit make it ok now?
