Columbia University ETP 2008
Hi K, i was unable to attend visiting day last year, but i did attend a regular open house (for prospective students) that was offered the week before visiting day. there were a handful of other students who did this as well, and the directors of the program were nice enough to take us all into another room where we could ask them questions (unfortunately, there were no students there that day to speak to). you could call the admissions office to see if this is an option for you. i think that its important for you to find out how the program runs, and what it's like to be a student in the program in order to make sure that its a good fit for you. if you end up not being able to make it to visiting day, i'd be happy to chat with you to answer some of your questions. good luck :) annie

"I was wondering exactly what you mean by "five by five" classes. Are there six (5 wk.) rotations, three in the fall and three in the spring before integration or am I missing something?" there are 5 different rotations, each 5 weeks long. you'll have 3 of them in the fall, and you'll have 2 of them in the spring. the last portion of the spring semester is integration. "I know that you said that either wed. or thurs in the summer is the clinical or assessment lab, but I wanted to know what the non-clinical day looks like...is it another 8-4?" if you're assigned to clinical on wednesday, then assessment lab will be on thursday. i believe lab was 8-4...but i actually don't remember the exact time (not sure if i'm answering your question clearly...feel free to ask follow ups if i'm not!). "Also, do you mean that you are taking two classes during each 5 week period or are there two all fall and two all spring...I was a bit confused because it didn't seem to work out given the class list either way." in the fall, you have 3 five by fives, as well as two semester-long classes. in the spring, you'll have your 2 five by fives, and as well as one five week long class on top of each of these. during integration, the only class you'll have is a seminar. "Last, but not least, I was wondering what classes other than pharm. and the assessment class/lab are covered in the summer." you'll have a class called "science of nursing practice" which covers some fundamentals of nursing, a community nursing class, and advanced physiology on top of pharm and physical assessment. hope this helps! :)

Columbia University ETP 2008
the program directors warned us not to have any big life events during ETP, but i got married and moved to a new apartment within the past year during the course of the program, and i survived :). i also know another student that got married during the program as well, and to my knowledge hes doing just fine, too! i think that they warn us not to because the program DOES add a lot of stress to your life, and some people in the past have not been able to handle it. another thing to consider is that people moving here from out of state also have the added stress of dealing with adjusting to NYC, which can be difficult. i guess the bottom line is that the program can add lots of stress to your life, and any big life change can make it even harder, but its definitely not impossible to do.

i'm currently in the RN portion of the program. i can't say for sure exactly how many of us were accepted into acute...but i think there were around 10-12 of us that came in...perhaps a few more?...that's just a rough estimation. i'm not sure how many people are planning on going onto acute care at this point in time though. as you may have heard, many people in ETP end up changing their specialties, which is one great thing about columbia..they allow you to. and yes, you will be able to speak to students during the visiting day (i'll be there!).

i second that, dg05. i also was not contacted for an interview. there has been talk about introducing an interview into the application process for future applicants, but nothing has been decided or set yet. i'd definitely consider the essay your interview.

hi! im in a somewhat similar boat. i currently live on the upper east side, but will be getting married in august and moving to brooklyn. where in brooklyn will you be commuting from? i'll be coming from williamsburg, so i think that i'll take the L train to 14th street and then take the A allll the way up to 168th. the A runs express, so my guess is that it won't be too too bad. my commute to work now is an hour and a half, so i tell myself that anything less than that is a positive change :).

Columbia: Questions about ETP
i have a mac too. my feeling is that so many students nowadays use macs...i don't think that we'll have too many problems with it.

Columbia: Questions about ETP
for the med-math textbook, i noticed on barnesandnoble.com that they have a recent edition that was published in 2005. the one that they listed on the columbia website says its the 4th edition, published in 2002. does anyone know if they definitely want us to get the 2002 version, or should we get the more recent one?

i agree...i welcome the one month break in august! i'll actually be getting married during that break, so it'd better be true :). one student i contacted did tell me that the break is a much-needed break after the first intense "boot-camp" summer semester. it does suck that our other breaks are so short, though...
