Nursing Students Post Graduate

So where are the potential 2008 Columbia ETPers at? I think a handful of regulars around here have Columbia on their list of apps, so heres a thread to get us through until notifications in Spring 2008. If you'd like, reply here and let us know which specialty you are trying for! I just submitted my app online for Acute Care...Good luck everyone! ;)

Hey Kevin,

I think we are all really curious about what's in store for us- would you mind giving us a quick overview of what to expect in the beginning? For example, what is a typical day/week like for you? What time to classes start/end, how many hours of studying per night? Is it true what they said at the open house day- that you better not get sick/married/pregnant/divorced your first year?

Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated!

thanks ;-)

I'm in Northern Cali and got mine last night!! I'm in for Acute Care! Yeah! I was so nervous checking the mailbox last night but it all worked out!

Hi Guys,

Congrads to all who received acceptance into ETP and much of luck to whose still waiting for a response. I live in California (Bay Area) and I'm in for the Combined BSN/MSN dual Nurse Midwifery and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. I received the letter on Friday afternoon.

I am planning to visit the school on Friday, March 7th and I cannot wait to meet future colleagues and get to know the program more.

the program directors warned us not to have any big life events during ETP, but i got married and moved to a new apartment within the past year during the course of the program, and i survived :). i also know another student that got married during the program as well, and to my knowledge hes doing just fine, too!

i think that they warn us not to because the program DOES add a lot of stress to your life, and some people in the past have not been able to handle it. another thing to consider is that people moving here from out of state also have the added stress of dealing with adjusting to NYC, which can be difficult.

i guess the bottom line is that the program can add lots of stress to your life, and any big life change can make it even harder, but its definitely not impossible to do.

Well, I got my letter today and I guess I am the first one who did not get accepted. But that is okay. I was applying for the anesthesia specialty and I know it is ultra-competitive. Good luck to all of you in your future careers.

Scott

Dear Scott and other "unlucky" applicants,

I am sorry for your situation. Out of six applications, I only got into 2 schools... and both of them are on the opposite coast from where I live. Now I find myself in a very difficult situation to having a long distance marriage starting in the summer. All BSN/MSN programs are very, very competitive. I know it is upsetting and it's hard to read all these people talking about their acceptances and making plans, etc. - I've been in that position; but keep your hopes high and take all news as a successful opportunity for the future!

Best of luck!

Scott,

I'm sorry you didn't receive good news...good luck to you and keep on movin' forward toward your goal of anesthesia! ;)

Hi Scott,

I'm sorry you didn't get this one but it sounds like you've got the right attitude. Just keep working as hard as you've been working and you'll get in to a program. I was just at a party last night speaking with a woman who has been a nurse educator and leader for more than 40 years. She was saying that it is literally thousands of qualified people each year that are being turned away from programs just because there simply is not enough space. Of course we've likely heard this all before but it was pretty amazing to hear it from someone who has been in the trenches all this time. I guess the lesson was, even really good candidates can be turned away from programs due to lack of availability. Scott, I'm sure you are a great candidate, I'm sorry Columbia lost out on the opportunity to work with you but I'm sure another school will be thrilled to get you.

Good Luck!

You are not alone scott

I got the big rejection letter too. I was crushed. I really thought I was on top of my game.

I was applying to anesthesia too.

sigh.

I dont know what to do now.

Hey everyone,

Just joining in on the turmoil that is applying to these programs.....still waiting for my letter from columbia ETP.....I applied to the dual degree womens heath NP and midwifery....I know that they can reject you from a certain specialty (midwifery and anesthesia) and have you choose another - What are people's thoughts about not being able to get your specialty of choice? Should I spend less money on an accelerated bachelors and at least still have the chance to do midwifery later?

Also, these programs are so cut throat its crazy....I am a 3.9 biology major, chem minor with all the application works and I was rejected from the Stony brook accelerated bachelors - needless to say this made me a psycho worrying I won't get into anything.

Any ETP applicants also considering Molloy college??

:wink2:

I am seeing that many qualified candidates are being rejected for these programs. I have a question-Are the various direct entry programs (with no nursing experience) harder to get into than if you are already an RN and applying? Or are they equally competitive?

Thanks for your feedback.
