Columbia University ETP Program 2013

Published

The thread here for the Columbia University ETP program for entry in 2012 is pretty long (45 pages right now!), so I was hoping to elicit some of the same responses for those who are applying in 2013. Let's get to know each other!

Why are you applying to Columbia? What have you heard about the program- good, bad or ugly? Are you nervous, excited, ambivalent?

Looking forward to getting to know some of you!

Hey! Did your letter mention anything specific about the oncology concentration? Mine did not but that is what I applied for.

On a second note, I would call Columbia and ask them to extend the deadling a week. Schools are really understanding with that scenario. It's a sticky situation though :( maybe call Duke and explain to them your predicament and ask if they have suggestions?

Thanks for the advice. I am going to keep my "fingers crossed" (;)) that I'll be able to come up with some kind of compromise! Three days isn't THAT much of a difference.

No mine didn't say anything about the oncology concentration but it was what was on my application. I guess it's only an extra semester so maybe they let you decide to do it later? I guess we could ask them to clarify. Did the adult ones mention the oncology concentration?

I'm in for FNP!!!!!! Just curious, did anyone else apply for the dual masters MS/MPH program? I clicked that box when I applied but didn't see anything about getting accepted to the MPH portion. I'm still kind of unsure if I'd want to take on the extra year of school and debt, but if I get enough financial aid for it then I'd like to come away with a BSN/MSN/MPH in 4 years.

Anyway, congrats to all who got in!!!

I'm in for Peds!! :)

i applied for peds onc, but my decision email said accepted for peds too..

I'm in for FNP!!

I didn't get in but already started the bsn program at NYU earlier this year. Columbia was my top school but so far I've been impressed with NYU's accelerated nursing program. So I guess fate has a way of taking care of things. Congrats to those who got in and to those who didn't, don't give up!!!

Congratulations everyone!!!! :) Glad to say all the waiting and hard work was worth it!

Is anyone else who was accepted planning to move from California? It's quite a big decision, so I'm a bit hesitant even though this decision was the only thing I've been dreaming about for the past couple months.

Does anyone have any advice or insight regarding financial aid/scholarships? When do we apply for financial aid and how do the loans usually work out? I'm trying to get a better idea of my finances and how I'm going to manage the $$$$$$..yikes!

Also, is Visit Day mandatory?

Congrats everyone!!! I'm really excited!

Beyoo216, I'm from southern california and I completely understand what you are feeling right now! I am on the same boat! I am very thankful to be admitted to CU, but it is a big decision to make. Have you applied to any schools in california?

beyoo216, I'm from Cali too but waiting to hear back from UCSF before I make any final decisions. It's gonna be HARD to decide between the 2 if I get into both.

If you haven't done so already, apply for FAFSA now! When you apply for it make sure to put down 5th year/undergraduate for your student status...this way you'll be able to maximize your financial aid...and I think that's what's been told for us to do when applying. For the first year, they said 95-96% of students get the SON $25k scholarship. During the 2nd year that turns into a $10k scholarship and then there's the Alumni scholarship that's $5-8k good for 1 semester. For 2012 then ETP cost $78,680 but with the scholarship it'll be $53k. Factor in about $28,600 for cost of living...so loans will most likely fill in the gap.

Visit Day isn't mandatory...but it's REALLY good to go to network with other folks to find potential roommates and such.

Does anyone know if Columbia has opportunities to study abroad for the community nursing experience like some other schools do?

samdaman, I've been lurking the past several months trying to get intel on the stats of all candidates on this forum. You have some iron clad GRE scores. See, I fail in the third AF core value, "excellence in all we do". But I make up for it with "service before self" and "integrity first" :)

I thought I was reading my own post when I saw yours; Air Force officer (although IRR), FNP candidate, and living in CA. Anyways, I got in for FNP too! I'll see you there if you decide to leave sunny Cali for the concrete jungle as well!

AFMedicoSocialWorker, I don't think my GRE scores were all that great besides my quantitative (I'm asian). Verbal and writing were just around average. Anyway, congrats on getting into the program too! I'm working on a cost/benefit analysis right now to weigh my options right now (although may be pointless if I don't get accepted to my other choice). I pretty much run the numbers and estimate that our total cost with GI Bill will come out to around $51k not including our BAH for the 3 year program. So is Columbia your 1st choice?
